Read Chapter 2 (pp11-13) of Cole/Kelly (2011) ‘Management Theory and Practice.’ Management has been described in many differing ways by many different people; there is no one generally accepted definition of the term ‘management’. Many people believe that the definition of Henri Fayol, from 1916, still holds true today. He said: -------------------------------------------------

“To manage is to forecast and plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate and to control.” (H.Fayol, 1916) -------------------------------------------------
In 150 – 200 words, explain your views on this statement, what it means to you, and whether you think that the statement is as true today as it was when made.

There are many different views on management and not one view would suit all managers and their organizations. In my own opinion, from my research and general knowledge, I believe management is defined as making the best decisions possible to ensure the organization is run in the most efficient manner reaching their own set targets. If these targets are efficiently reached every time I believe that the management is doing a successful job. Many theorists have attempted defining management, but Fayol was a true pioneer, the first to identify management as a process of six major activities. Namely to plan: examine the future and lay out the actions to be taken. To organize: lay out the lines of authority and responsibility; build up the dual structure, material and undertaking. To coordinate: layout the timing and sequencing of activities; bind together, unify, and harmonize all activities and efforts. To command: put the plan into action; set the work in operation. To control: monitor and correct: see that everything occurs in conformity with established rules and expressed command.
