Video Game Industry: An Argumentative Analysis
The video game industry has been under repeated attack by accusations that the material in their best-selling video games has harmful effects on children and on society as a whole. With $10 billion dollars in annual sales the gaming industry has an interest in any policies that may hinder business and produce false information to the public. In the search for answers an examination of medical findings from groups such as the American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), and even the United States Surgeon General will be taken into account while investigating for the truth. Doug Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software Association, for instance stated in May 12, 2000 interview on CNN that “There is absolutely no evidence that playing video games leads to aggressive behavior.” He is also quoted in a PBS interview in 2005 that “Every independent researcher who has come to this without a preconceived notion trying to prove that video games are harmful has looked at the literature and said there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that violent video games are harmful.” (Anderson, Gentile and Buckley 153) In several court cases states and municipalities have attempted to pass legislation to restrict the sale of violent video games without parental consent. The video game industry have actively worked to nullify any such laws and have always succeeded thus far. Claiming that the parents are responsible for the decision of what their children play, the games are rated so that the parents can acknowledge what is age appropriate.     All video games are given a set rating based on content by the ESRB. These games are rated from eC(Early Childhood) to Ao(Adults Only. Although the focus of studies on violent video games is normal focused on young gamers, 18 years of age and younger, they only make up a small portion of the gaming population. Only 32% of gamers are18 years old or younger. The 32% of the gamers that are focused on during these studies are not allowed to purchase games with M or Ao ratings without parental consent.     After review of the publication, Game On, a Harvard Health Letter, I discovered that the social and cultural ramifications of video games are of high debate upon many parents and adults. Games are played by people of all ages and sexes but the vast majority of “gamers” are teenage boys. This is worry some considering they are attracted to action games with bloodshed, violence and explicit content. In Grand Theft Auto, a best seller, the players sell drugs on the streets while shooting at gangs and buying prostitutes, what we in America consider violent behavior. Thirty years of research prove that media violence promotes aggressive behavior in young people however, due to the amount of additional underlying factors which can be ruled in such as substance abuse, cultural beliefs, abusive parents and innate personalities, it is very hard to establish a direct connection between the violence stemming from these games and other things. Through research of brain scans they have proven that thoughts of aggression and violent shooter games will activate the brain in a similar way however, directly showing a link to the games and violence in the real world has not yet occurred. Although some claim that games have real benefits it seems they are more so to promote aggressive behavior.     Why did our forefathers come to America? Why did they risk hopping on a boat, not knowing if they would survive the voyage? What could possibly be so important to them, that they jeopardized seeing their loved ones left behind again? The answer is freedom. Land of the free, home of the brave. One of the most criticized forms of personal entertainment is video games and specifically the violent variety. Some of the most infamous violent video games are the dramatic decapitations, limb removal sequences and big blood splashes which are plentiful in God of War. As well as, Dead Space, an interactive horror story, where the gamer must destroy monstrosities by any means necessary to prevent getting mauled, bitten, impaled, torn in half or eaten. None of those sound like games any real parent would allow their child to play. But, we are the ones raising our children and not a politician, news corporation or much less some stranger. We are the ones that get to tell our kids, “no means no!” Some non-gaming adults claim people engaging in violent video games will start to confuse fantasy and reality, they will take the violence viewed in the game and believe such behavior is acceptable in the real world. But more informed adults would counter those assertions by stating that, if the vast amount of people which play violent video games all acted out on the violence they witness in games then anarchy would reign.
