Video games can not only affect your social relationships with your family and friends, it could also affect your grades in school. Teenagers might not like their life in the real world, and the virtual gaming world gives them a second chance to live the life they’ve dreamed their whole life. In this report you will be presented many ways and facts about video game addiction in teenagers. What is video game addiction?
Video game addiction is when someone spends most of their time on video games and neglecting their basic needs. Video game addiction mostly applies to teens because they have the most time and that’s when they are really intrigued by games. There are two major types of video games and so there are two major types of video game addictions. Standard video games are generally to be played by a single player and involve a clear goal or mission, such as rescuing a princess. The addiction in these games is often related to completing that mission or beating a high score or preset standard. In single player type games it is VERY addicting because you feel like you have to complete the story or else you are missing out on something. After you finish a mission it is cliffhanger to the next mission. That is the reason why these games are so addicting. It is like a TV show, once you finish one episode you are tempted to move on to the next one because you are dying to find out what happens in the next episode. Everyone needs closure and that’s why some people can sit down and play a game for more than 10 hours straight without intermissions. When you play a video game you feel like you’re in a different world and your life is the most important thing in that game. Once you finish the story it feels like your life is complete like you accomplished something extraordinary and your life is unique to everyone else’s.
The second type of video game addiction is associated with online video games. These games are played online with other people around the world and are especially addictive because they generally have no end. Gamers with this type of addiction enjoy creating and temporarily becoming an online character. Since they are interacting with other online players they are building relationships with them. It is also an escape to the real world because you are still interacting with people just not face-to-face. For ex. The Call of Duty series is one of the world’s most famous FPS (first person shooter) games around the world. Some people only buy the game for the multiplayer instead of the story mode. The online mode allows you to customize your online character and the objective is to run around shooting people and gaining points for killing other players. These games literally have NO END because you can play these games for hours and hours because each game has a different scenario and you have to use a different strategy every time to win. Since this is an online game there is a ranking system which displays how good and pro you are compared with players around the world. If you’re in the top 50’s you can be well known and become famous for it. If the player knows they can’t become famous in the real world, they can be famous in the virtual world which later will lead into fame in the real world. Another game like “Grand Theft Auto” allows the person to create their own avatar and drive around and kill...
