Theatre Reviews On Wednesday, December 4th I saw an original play called “A Christmas Carol” by: Charles Dickens. The play was presented by the Reagan theater program at the Reagan auditorium. This joyful and upbeat play was about a ungrateful man the resented giving. When visited by his old co-worker ‘Jacob Marley’ telling his that he will be visited by three ghost. The Christmas past, present, and lastly the ghost of Christmas future. After undergoing the ghosts work Ebenezer Scrooge became a changed man that love the time of Christmas year. During the show, I very much enjoyed the performance of Roddy Hemmick. He played as the one and only Ebenezer Scrooge. He had a sense of life in himself throughout the entire performance. He sold himself as old (not a young prime high school student). His best part would be when Jacob Marley would rumble his house and the way he went running was priceless. Also, I give the department props when he went to dance to the song without any one hitting him while he leaped in the middle of the dancing group. I also would like to discuss the performance of Chase Bradshaw who played Jacob Marley. He was sensational he played like a dead man beautifully. When we would walk with the chains on his back and sold the weight of his sins, I loved it. At the end of the play when scrooge was appearing as if he was going to fire his employ when being late to work then he gave him a raise, well as scrooge progressed Marley look more and more disappointed the jumped with glee and the man got a raise.

I enjoyed this production because it was based on the well-known Christmas carol. This made it more pleasant to watch and was very interesting. The acting in this play was exceptional! That held my interest and kept me involved in the play to the end. In conclusion, this was a very entertaining and all around great play!

On Nov 25, 2015 I went to Calgary Theater, with my class, to watch a Charles Dickens play called Christmas Carol. Christmas Carol reveals about poverty and social injustice during the Victorian Era, these topics are discussed during Christmas time in this novella. In this play, Dicken shows class differences of Victorian England and the selfishness of the rich, and the Poor Laws that keeps the underclass down. The worldview involved during that time, mainly focused on child labour and unsatisfied jobs with low wages, from which a person could hardly meet the needs of his family. This was…

The acting in this play was great. The actor I was looking most forward to was Brooke Shields. Honestly don’t think that she was that great. It could have just been the character of Morticia, but after it was all over I felt like she stood out the least. To be fare it could have just been that she was having a bad night though because when she was handing out autographs after the play she apologized for not doing well. The other star, Roger Rees, was pretty good. He definitely was not my favorite part of the show, but he did a good job playing Gomez. He was somewhat dry, but he had enough to keep him memorable. Adam Riegler was the young boy who played Pugsley. He did an outstanding job and unfortunately wasn’t a huge part of the show. I would have liked it if they had involved him in a few more scenes. The best part of the show was definitely Rachel Potter in the role of Wednesday. She blew everyone else out of the water in terms of her acting and singing. She was the true star of the show in my opinion. The way she acted really made the audience want things to work for her and the character Lucas. The actors Heide Blickenstaff and Adam Grupper did a good job in the role of Lucas’ parents. I feel that they did there job in being good character foils to Gomez and Morticia. Jesse Swenson was another actor that I thought did great. He played Wednesdays love interest Lucas. He did a fantastic job and was almost as good as Rachel Potter. Another role which I was disappointed in was Brad Oscar…

In class these past couple days we have been watching a movie called A "Christmas Carol." It is an exhilarating movie also and old one at that. There are many main characters, but the main one I am focused on is the elder man named Ebenezer Scrooge. He is the elder man in the movie that is traveling back into his past to see why it is he hates Christmas. This man has three ghosts of Christmas take him back to realize he has been putting blame where it is not needed. In the beginning he still continues to be himself and hate the day most people cherish and love, yet he chooses to demote the idea of Christmas.…

To be completely honest, I would have to say that majority of the acting was very mediocre. I know it wasn’t supposed to be like something off of Broadway but I expected a lot more, and I felt like only a couple of actors came through with that. The acting was not terrible, but it wasn’t spectacular either. I felt like some characters were not putting their all into their characters. I also felt like some people should not have been casted into the roles they had received. Many times a background character would outshine a main character during the performance. Pertaining to the acting, I think that the fact that it was a musical added more stress to the actors which consequently could have placed a strain on their acting abilities. This is because they were most likely more concerned with their vocals. Something I did like in their acting was the fact that they used little children, I found that very adorable.…

Dickens is able to show the change in Scrooge’s character by establishing what Scrooge is like at the very beginning of the story with the first two words he says: ‘“Bah! Humbug!”’ It is clear from the dismissive tone and the two exclamation marks that Scrooge has no patience with the idea of Christmas as a special time.…

Overall, I thought the play was fantastic. I enjoyed the dark atmosphere that the director created that helped enhance the plot and mood of the play. I also appreciated the great deal of work and effort the actors had to put in, to present a play written in a different form of english. The actresses that played the witches did an excellent job portraying the insanity and mysterious values of the witches. I also thought the Porter did a great job, as he brought some much needed comic relief the play. To be quite honest, I can’t think of any characters that didn’t give a good performance. From what I saw, no characters messed up lines, cues or made errors that had an impact on the outcome of the play.…

The director stayed completely true to the playwright in his rendition of this play. From what I could tell, all of the original dialogue and props were used, and the actors portrayed the original characters very well. Throughout the entire play both my interest and my friend’s were maintained, but the one aspect that needed work was the singing. I remember cringing during the song “Beautiful Girl” and leaning over to my friend saying “this is awful.” She agreed. I’m not sure if maybe the actor was sick or if he really was just a bad singer. Either way he looked as if he was quite nervous on stage, and I feel that his part could have and should have been re-cast. Aside from this, I felt that everyone else suited their character perfectly.…

Scrooge is so mean and greedy that rather than spend money painting out his business partner, Jacob Marley’s, name above the door of the office he prefers to leave it as it is: “Scrooge never painted out old Marley’s name”. Introducing the main protagonist “Ebenezer Scrooge” - “Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone...a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scarping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint.” (p2). Scrooge was a man who had no sympathy for anyone or anything. ‘‘Even the blind men's dogs appeared to know him; and when they saw him coming, would tug their owners into doorways and up courts; and then would wag their tails as though they said’’(pg3). He was so greedy, that if his employee Bob Crachit wanted more money he would have to work for Christmas day. He had no regards for Christmas and anyone who believe in it and enjoyed it with their families. He was just a miserly old man, who believed that Christmas was just an excuse for people who wanted to miss work and for idle people to expect handouts. Jacob Marley, was Scrooge’s business partner and the first to visit him with ‘‘No rest, no peace. Incessant torture of remorse’’ (p15). Marley wanted to warn him to stop living his life in an unchristian way; otherwise he will have to spend his death after life paying for what he has done…

The version of the movie I viewed for this assignment was the Disney version from 2009. I chose this version because Jim Carrey does a great voice-over job throughout the entire movie and it is relatively easy to find. A Christmas Carol is about how one man changed his life for the better over the course of one Christmas Eve. On that meaningful night, Scrooge undergoes change after he encountered several figures of Marley’s ghost and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. He learned that life is not worth living if all you care about is your possessions. After his experiences subside and he is back in his bedroom, he becomes immersed with…

Lastly, the writing and dialogue of the musical was great. There were characters who had comical stories that helped lighten up the sad stories. I personally think the show had the perfect amount of emotions tied into it, ranging from happy to tragic to hilarious. In my opinion, the personal stories were perfectly assigned to the actors and actresses because their roles felt so real that their stories felt almost as if it was his/her true life story. Because all of the stories interconnected to each other in a unique way, it made the storyline even better than I had…

My first reaction to this play was restricted because of the lack of my open mindedness. This would happen to be my first and only play I have ever seen or even thought of seeing. I didn’t expect much but as it started it began to catch my attention and make me actually want to listen and take in the purpose and meaning of this particular act. Having not knowing what other plays are like, I thought this one was pretty cool because the stage was the center of attention with audiences on both sides. Overall I was very impressed on the actors’ performances. Father Flynn the supposed molester, Ms. Muller the mother of the young boy, the only African American boy in the school, Sister James the young teacher whom likes Father Flynn, and Sister Aloysius who thinks he’s a molester.…

In 'A Christmas Carol', Charles Dickens represents Scrooge as an unsympathetic man who is offered the opportunity to redeem himself. The Christmas Carol is the best movie to watch this holiday with the family. The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge an old cranky, miserable and evil old man who gets a visit by the 3 Christmas ghosts. The first visit is from his deceased employee who warns him about his ways. The ghost warns Scrooge that he must change his ways if not he will have a miserable afterlife. The first Christmas ghost that visits Scrooge shows him the Christmas past in which he had sad and happy moments. The past sad moments shows the reason why Scrooge hates Christmas. The 2nd ghost the Christmas present shows him how many people are celebrating Christmas. The ghost shows how many family that hardly have anything are very happy to celebrate with what little they…
