“That hand the rocks the cradle rules the world.” Moms have perhaps the biggest purpose in the world, and moms have perhaps the widest job description in the world. They are everything from chauffeur to chef to chaperone. However, what happens when moms get sick? Should they take a break, sleep in, and let the responsibility of their children fall on others? Not according to the Vicks company. In one of their advertisements found in a magazine targeted to mothers, the ad may effectively draw mothers in, but it also unintentionally degrade mothers and make them feel guilty for being sick. The Food and Drug Administration relaxed the regulations regarding the need to advertise the side-effects of prescription drugs in 1997. (FDA) The relaxed regulation allows for direct-to-consumer advertising and this change the marketing strategies. There is now an influx of pharmaceutical advertising using infomercials. Gary Humphreys informs us in his article, “Direct-to-Consumer Advertising Under Fire”, that pharmaceutical companies “spent just under $5 billion last year alone” (576) on this type of advertising. Because consumers have a desire to take control of their health they are now going in the doctor’s office and telling the doctor’s about the infomercial and the drug that they would like to try.…

Vicodin is prescription medication that is used to treat moderate to severe pain in adults. The two main ingredients in Vicodin are Hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is considered to be a pain reliever that acts similarly to codine and is effective at decreasing the pain as well as relieving cough, however its can also cause drowsiness, mood changes, and metal “clouding”. Because of this reason the it can only be used when combined with another drug and not alone, as far as in the United States. Therefore its combined with acetaminophen, which is also a pain reliever along with a fever reducer. The combination of these two drugs helps improve acetaminophen’s effectiveness at relieving pain as well as limiting the potential abuse of Hydrocodone. The maximum dose of Vicodin is usually controlled by the amount of acetaminophen that it contains.…
