Friar Lawrence is Responsible for the Death of Romeo & Juliet

An older person should be more responsible and wise than a young person and they should know right from wrong. A priest should be able to give helpful advice to young people but Friar Lawrence did the opposite. Friar Lawrence is responsible for the tragedy of Rome and Juliet. Firstly he married the couple when he knew the families hated each other. Secondly he was in favor of Romeo loving Juliet after he got banished even though it caused more problems. Third Friar Lawrence did not send Romeo a letter in which it would explain the plan. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet happened because of the carless mistakes Friar Lawrence made.

Firstly, Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet even though he knew the families had an ongoing feud. “But come, young waverer, come go with me , In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happy prove To Turn your households rancor to pure love “(II IV,93-96). This quote shows us that Friar Lawrence wanted to marry them because he wanted to be the one who solved their issues so he could be the reason of their happiness. This tells us that he is thinking about himself only and not how this can affect Romeo and Juliet and their families. Secondly when Romeo killed Tybolt and he got banished from Verona, Friar Lawrence still told Romeo not to give up and go to Juliet. “Go, get thee to thy love, as was decreed, Ascend her chamber, hence and comfort her: But look thou stay not till the watch be set, For then thou canst not pass to Mantua; Where thou shalt live, till we can find a time To blaze your marriage, reconcile your friends, Beg pardon of the prince, and call thee back “(III iii 150-156). This quote shows us that Friar Lawrence is still trying to make Romeo love Juliet despite that their love would have caused more problems for example the death of Tybolts death. Thirdly When Romeo leaves Verona Friar Lawrence gave Juliet a 24 hour sleep potion to trick her family into thinking she was dead and sent Romeo a letter explaining about his plan. Friar Lawrence is informing this to Juliet “In the mean time, against thou shalt awake, Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, And hither shall he come: and he and I, Will watch thy waking, and that very night, Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua” (IV i 114-1120). This citation tells us that Friar Lawrence is trying to help Romeo and Juliet but Friar Lawrence forgot to send the letter to Romeo because of that careless mistake it cost the lives of both Romeo and Juliet. Since Romeo thought Juliet was actually dead since he did not receive Friar Lawrence letter he chose to commit suicide since his life would not have been complete with the absence of Juliet. If Friar Lawrence had send the letter to Romeo his plan would have went smoothly but Friar Lawrence didn’t send the letter. Friar Lawrence
