Lizards are the largest group of reptiles with more than 4300 species around the world. Lizards are found in sub-tropical and tropical regions of the world. Lizards come in different shapes and sizes. Most of the lizards are quite small have four legs and have a fragile tail that can regenerate when part of it is gone. They look similar to salamanders. Lizards are ectoderms meaning they cold blooded, meaning they depend on outside sources like the sun, to raise and maintain their body temperatures. Eating habits for lizards is very different, it depends on the species. Some lizards feed on iguanas which are insects, some eat rodents, and some eat both rodents and insects. Lizards use their teeth to scare predators off as protection. Very few lizards happen to be poisonous and use their venom as a defence. Other species of lizards rely on camouflage such as the chameleon that is able to change its colour according to its surroundings, as a defensive strategy. Females of most lizard species lay eggs and then are usually left to hatch on their own. The most well-known venomous lizards are the Gila monster and he Mexican Beaded Lizard. They are found in Mexico and south west of United States. These lizards are classified in the Family Helodermatidae which has one genus containing only these two species. Both of these lizards have been known as the only venomous lizards for a long time. But more recently discoveries have been made that there are more

The Iguana, also known as the most common iguana; is the largest lizard in the Americas, around 6.5 feet and about 11 pounds. They are one of the most popular reptile pet in the United States regardless of how hard they are to care for. Usually the iguanas that are kept as pets or held captive, die within the first year; or many get released into the wild or are given to reptile rescue groups. The iguanas have a wide range of living areas. Some examples are: Northern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and Southern Brazil. They spend most of their lives in an overhanging covering and only leave to mate, lay eggs, or change trees. Generally herbivores, iguanas are more active during the day, eating on leaves, flowers, and fruit. They usually live by water and are great swimmers. If endangered, they will jump from a branch, sometimes from increasing heights, and escape with a leap to the water under them. They are also solid enough to land on sturdy ground from as high as 40 feet and live. Iguanas' big sturdy bodies gives them a lazy look, but they are fast and active on land. They have sturdy jaws with razor-sharp teeth and sharp tails, which make up most of their body length and can be used as whips to scare off predators. They can also break off their tails if caught and will grow another tail without any previous permanent damage. Some other members of the iguana family include the Fiji Island banded iguana, the desert iguana, and the Galápagos Islands marine iguana. Their looks, actions, and threatened rankings differ from species to species. Due to Florida's height in the exotic pet trade, iguanas given to us as pets have escaped or been released into the wild, and are now settled in South Florida. They can do all sorts of damage to your plants. Iguanas eat plants and that is very true when you are talking about types of fruit plants. They also need a place to live/shelter and if you do not have messes or…

    Snake Handling

    • 274 Words
    • 2 Pages

Snake handling is a religious ritual in a small number of Pentecostal churches in the U.S., usually characterized as rural and part of the Holiness movement. The practice began in the early 20th century in Appalachia, spreading to mostly coal mining towns. The practice plays only a small part of the church service of churches that practice snake handling. Most religious snake handlers are still found in the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States, especially in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Ohio. However, they are gaining greater recognition from news broadcasts, movies and books about the non-denominational movement. In 2001 there were about 40 small churches that practiced snake handling, most of them considered to be holiness-Pentecostals. Some of the leaders in these churches have been bitten numerous times; some of the leaders in these churches have been bitten numerous times, as indicated by their distorted extremities. Hensley himself, the founder of modern snake handling in the Appalachian Mountains, died from fatal snakebite in 1955. In 1998, snake-handling evangelist John Wayne "Punkin" Brown died after being bitten by a timber rattler at the Rock House Holiness Church in rural northeastern Alabama. Members of his family contend that his death was probably due to a heart attack. The states of Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee have passed laws against the use of venomous snakes and/or other reptiles in a place that endangers the lives of others, or without a permit. The Kentucky law specifically mentions religious services; in Kentucky snake handling is a misdemeanor and punishable by a $50 to $250…
