VDread Scott artwork “what is the proper way to display the US flag?” In the exhibit, they place the flag the United States flag on the floor and they have a book to so people can write their opinion. Above the book, there is a picture of South Korea students burning the flag. “President Bush Sr. declared What is the Proper Way… “disgraceful” and the entire US Congress denounced this work as they passed legislation to “protect the flag.”(Dread Scott.net) Dread Scott had the courage to display his artwork the way he did. I think it was brave of him to display it in the form he did. His artwork is controversial because in order for people to write there thought they have to be willing to step on the flag.     (Sayre, p.20) The white woman in the painting is pledging her allegiance to the flag but in the same breath she is being depicted as a racist denying blacks their civil rights. It is also depicting the struggles that her community and she were facing while trying to gain equal rights from the majority of white Americans. In this oil painting she uses only three colors, black, white and red which are indicative to her other paintings in the series.     Created in the age of McCarthyism, Jasper Johns’ “Flag” was the first and perhaps most popular version of his flag paintings. Johns is said to have first dreamed of the flag before painting it, but John’s painting was rich in symbolism as he liked it to the use of things the mind already knew. Done in 1954, when flag’s seemed to be everywhere in the news and as the McCarthy hearings were going on questioning the loyalty of citizens to their government, as symbolized by the flag were ending three days before Flag Day, or as President Dwight Eisenhower signed an amendment to the Constitution that added the phrasing “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. Some people say that Johns had a much more personal attachment to the flag, as he was a Korean War veteran that was named for Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero who was famous for raising the American flag during an important battle. As a result, Jasper Johns’ flag became not only a symbol for the nation and its internal issues, but also as a link to his past, with Johns painting more than 40 images of the flag.…
