I wish to participate in VSCS in order to further my knowledge in STEM and to feed my passion and curiosity for the science and engineering behind space exploration. Exploring space has always been a dream of mine since I was young so being able to participate in a program that enriches the science and engineering behind it brings me a step closer to accomplishing my dream. To start, I would be successful in this program based on the fact that I am very dedicated and self-sufficient in my work ethic, as well as organized and responsible. This helps me work to the best of my ability and harness any subject given to me through the means of meticulous and organized work. Also, I am excellent at critical thinking and being adaptable in my abilities

    “Hello, my name is Maya Parson and I would like to represent the city of Vance in the Virginia Girls’ State General Assembly.” The sound of my foot nervously tapping on the marble floor marked the silence that lay under my wavering voice. I had the concentrated attention of 50 of the most accomplished female rising seniors who where invited to spend a week at the American Legion Auxiliary’s Virginia Girl’s State program. I could feel the nervous sweat gathering on my palms. I was forced to place my paper on the podium after failing to read it in my unstable hands. It had been a turbulent past few days getting accustomed to the hectic routine and becoming best friends with 612 other brilliant females and here I was completely leaping from the bounds of comfort and campaigning for a representative office. What made me decide to stand up with eight other girls who had resumes that, although were lengthy, ultimately were superficial? I was not the type of person to put herself in a position to be judged publicly on merit. Putting myself out to be judged was exactly what I had avoided all of my life. I looked through the glass door into the courtyard of the Longwood Campus and saw a single flower on its own in a flower garden. Suddenly, the words of my junior year English teacher on transcendentalism had bombarded my thought process. I realized in this moment that going to other countries or being the head of a club did not give someone value as a political leader as candidates before me had argued. The worth of a human being comes from their contributions as a member of society and their ability to not just learn but to do. This can only be achieved by the recognition of the individual.     My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident.
