Vasco Nunez De Balboa
Monologue

Hello kids, my name is Vasco Nunez De Balboa. Most of you should know a little about me because you studied about me but any way I am here to give you more information about me and my explorations. So everyone fasten your seatbelts!! We are going back to the world in the 1400’s.

I was born in 1457, Jerez de los Caballeros, Mexico. I am a Spanish explorer. As a young boy I had two dreams: to become a famous explorer and to be an Olympic fencing champion. My Olympic dream never materialized. After I became big I went on an expedition to South America in 1501. One year later I myself found one island of Hispaniola. Several years later, in 1510, I enjoyed the change in fortune when I became acting governor of Darien. From there I led an expedition to Panama Some Indians told me that the land was located across the mountains near the great sea. When I approached Panama I spotted the great sea that I longed to see: The Pacific Ocean! Sadly I lived only a few more years on January 1519, I was sentenced to death. Long time back all explorers had no technology so they don’t know where they are going but I didn’t let my exploration be a failure so I took a compass to see the directions and an astrolabe to look at the position of the stars and know where I am going.
