Nationality: Dutch
Van Gogh worked as missionary in Belgium (mining region) where he began to sketch people and study art but started drawing from early age which he then decided he wanted to become an artist. He started painting in his late 20’s.
Van Gogh completed over 1,000 drawings in total and regarded drawing as a basic task enabling him to grow artistically and to study form and movement. Drawing was also a means of channelling his depression.
The art movement he was linked with was Postimpressionism which is the development of French art, using vivid colours, thick application of paint, distinctive brush strokes, but more emphasized to geometric forms.
His influences were;
Jean François Millet (French)
Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch)
Eugene Delacroix (French)
Ukiyo-e (Japanese town)

When he started painting in his late 20’s, he had used 860 oil paintings, more than 1,300 watercolours, drawings, sketches, and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He discovered bright palettes while he was in France, therefore his work grew brighter in colour which had him improving his work and developing unique styles. The techniques he had used were brush strokes to apply paint thickly, colour contrast, bolder composition, Japanese prints, watercolour for shading, and trying to use as much colours in different techniques so he can to create mood for expressing himself and create something different other than copying what he actually sees.
I think some of my drawings, used with chalk in dark colours, and sketching are related to Van Gogh’s work because when he was younger he used to draw most of the time and that he used some oil pastels and other materials to create bolder look with texture, so the chalk I used in my work had a soft texture but the shading created effect to clash with the
