Van Gogh Art Homework Year 10
Van Gogh
Born: 30 March 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands
Died: 29 July 1890, aged 37
Nationality: Dutch

Van Gogh worked as missionary in Belgium (mining region) where he began to sketch people and study art but started drawing from early age which he then decided he wanted to become an artist. He started painting in his late 20’s.
Van Gogh completed over 1,000 drawings in total and regarded drawing as a basic task enabling him to grow artistically and to study form and movement. Drawing was also a means of channelling his depression.

The art movement he was linked with was Postimpressionism which is the development of French art, using vivid colours, thick application of paint, distinctive brush strokes, but more emphasized to geometric forms.

His influences were;
Jean François Millet (French)
Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch)
Eugene Delacroix (French)
Ukiyo-e (Japanese town)
Impressionism

When he started painting in his late 20’s, he had used 860 oil paintings, more than 1,300 watercolours, drawings, sketches, and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He discovered bright palettes while he was in France, therefore his work grew brighter in colour which had him improving his work and developing unique styles. The techniques he had used were brush strokes to apply paint thickly, colour contrast, bolder composition, Japanese prints, watercolour for shading, and trying to use as much colours in different techniques so he can to create mood for expressing himself and create something different other than copying what he actually sees.

    When comparing the lines in the Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night painting and Sol LeWitt’s the Wall Drawing No. 681, the lines are the opposite. In the Starry Night painting the lines of the sky are very curvy and flowing, but the lines of the buildings are very straight. The artist in this painting is showing you a vision he has had during the time he was in the asylum. The lines of the sky are erratic, and it shows how the artist was feeling very unstable during the time he painted the piece. You can feel how peaceful the buildings are, but the sky is not peaceful. The artist is fighting with himself, and it shows in the painting. The Wall Drawing No.681 shows very straight and precise lines. The artist is feeling very controlled as he painted the piece. The lines appear to be mathematical, each of the lines are the same in length and distance. As you look at each of the lines, the colors are used more than once, but the tense of the color has changed. The lines in the piece are very organized.…

    Impressionism influenced the emergence of Postimpressionism which was similar to its predecessor still being of everyday outdoor scenes and artists expressed themselves freely in the art. (Sporre, 2009) However, artists of this period completely rejected the objective naturalism using color and form in more personal ways expressing a person view of the visual world. (Impressionism, 2000) Post-Impressionist artists deviated from Impressism due to the fact they did not care if the work was a visual experience as Edouard Manet did, they merely expressed themselves through the use of bright colors. One of the more famous artists of this period was Vincent van Gogh who may have been one of the most…

    His technique was revolved around the grid method. He would draw to create photo realism/realism. He wanted the drawings to really pop out the real life looking portraits he used a lot of nice shading and value. One reason of many that he made large pictures is because he was blind. He had to overcome the obstacle of that and a seizure which was later found out to be a blood clot in his spine. He was paralyzed from the neck down but soon started physical therapy to regain function. Lucky for him he got some movement back in his arms. He then traveled to Brussels, and following his brother’s advice to take up art as a career, he would paint mostly with dark colors, and had a hard time selling his art until after seeing Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli’s work and he adopted a brighter array of colors and was living with his brother. Two artists who have done this are Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh.…
