In the book Sold by Patricia McCormick Lakshmi is a thirteen year old girl who lives a life different from most thirteen year old kids with her siblings and her stepfather in a village in the Himalayan mountains. Lakshmi stepfather sells and sends her away with a stranger to become a maid for 10,000 rupees. “She says full payment is due, as well as 50 rupees extra for interest”.(36) She is basically saying she wants the full amount that she is worth. The value of human life is worth more than just a dollar amount. While there are several characters that loves and respect Lakshmi; most of them do not value her as much as they should. Lakshmi has to do whatever they tell her to do if she like it or not she is forced to have sex with them. She says ¨I am torn and bleeding where the men have been.¨(125) The men have no respect for Lakshmi and they don't care how bad they are hurting her. In the book it proves that they make her do nasty things but she it doesn't bother her as much anymore because she gets paid. Lakshmi said ¨he makes me do a nasty thing, but he gives me 10 rupees extra.¨(228) Also it says ¨ you belong to me and I paid a pretty sum for you too.¨(106) They control everything she does and her being younger she is more ¨pure¨ so that makes more men want her.

I value myself very highly mostly because I know I am worth more than can be explained. I know in this part of my life I have plans and goals that I know I can accomplish. I have to value myself more than anyone else can, because I have to believe in myself to complete what needs to be completed. If I didn't value myself like I am worth than more than a dollar then I wouldn't have such a high standard. I can also do a lot of things that most women can't do that encourages me to do better.
