Individuals typically display diverse modes of learning with multiple and varied talents with differing modalities of learning (Kumar, Smriti, Pratap, & Krishnee, 2012). The VAK instrument was expanded by Fleming and Mills in 1992 into the VARK. The original VAK founded in 1970 was original Visual, Aural, and Kinesthetic learning (Bernardes & Hannah, 2009, p. 1-12). Fleming developed an inventory designed to help students learn more about their individual learning preferences. Fleming’s VAK model identified three learning styles; Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. According to this theory most people have a preferred learning style however some people may prefer to learn using a mixture of all three styles. As with the previous theories each style within the VAK model has individual characteristics based on their learning preferences. Visual learners learn best through seeing. They think in pictures and have intense mental images. They like to learn using maps, charts, pictures or videos. They tend to have visual skills in activities such as reading, writing, puzzle building, interpreting charts and graphs, and painting and have a good sense of direction. Auditory learners like to learn through listening. They tend to think in words rather than pictures and learn best through lectures, discussions, talking things through and hearing other people’s opinions. Auditory learners tend to have highly developed auditory skills and are generally good at speaking and presenting. They demonstrate these skills through speaking, listening, storytelling, explaining, understanding the syntax and meaning of words, remembering information and analysing language usage. Kinaesthetic learners learn best through moving, touching and doing. They find it hard to sit…

How an individual understand information and use them to solve complex problems are mainly influenced by his or her learning style. Basically, when you can learn about how you learn, you can study and absorb information much more effectively. In 1987, Neil Fleming who has dedicated his life to explore teaching and learning, developed a popular model called VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic) to show that there are many ways an individual can learn effectively. “VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take-in and give-out information. ( Fleming, 2011) When we can learn about who we really are by knowing our preferences, we can reflect internally of what we can do to make a positive change for a better learning result. This paper will explore and analyze the scores received from VARK questionnaire which help identify learning styles for Tanida Maselli. It will also further investigate and compare the preferred learning styles and identified learning styles which influence teaching and learning.…

The Vark Questionnaire was used to evaluate an individual’s learning style which produced the following results: Visual (7), Aural (5), Read/Write (6), and Kinesthetic (9). The individual scored highest in Kinesthetic, but the final preference would be what is known as multimodal because the scores are very similar. A multimodal individual or Vark Type One can adapt to any situation and will prefer to shift modes based upon the situation at hand. This individual can be described as well-rounded, keeping an open mind to complete tasks with which…

An individual’s learning may be impacted by their culture, family background, and socioeconomic level. The cookie-cutter approach to teaching therefore will not work for every students learning style. We must begin to consider diversity over uniformity as it applies to teaching. Attention should be placed on beliefs, theories, and research as opposed to time or other perceived constraints. Because a patient and/or their family does not learn by our approach of teaching, does not mean they have failed at the objective. Perhaps the teaching style did not incorporate the patients and/or families learning style. There should not be an “everything goes” approach, however, if we promote and respect these differences their success and self-confidence will increase.…

The Vark Questionnaire consists of specific questions that asses an individual’s learning style. VARK stands for visual, aural, read-write and kinesthetic learning preferences (http://business.vark-learn.com). The questionnaire has 16 questions asking the test taker to choose the answer which best explains their preference. Upon completion of questionnaire, a profile is sent in return describing specific learning preferences and techniques. These results can be used to better enhance ones learning strategies (Alkhasawneh, Mrayyan, Docherty, Alashram, & Yousef, 2008, p. 573). This author took the questionnaire and received a multimodal learning preference determination.…

VAK stands for Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic learning styles. VAK helps to provide a simpler way to help someone to understand their own learning styles. Everyone has different ways that they like to learn in and how effective that learning style is for them. Some people may have a more than one type of learning style. For example, during a previous lesson we took a questionnaire independently to find out what was the best learning style was for us and my results showed that I am a visual learner and I believe this to be true as I like to look at examples and watch video clips to help me to complete a task however I believe that I am a kinaesthetic learner as well as I like to be hands on with certain tasks.…
