Using the autocratic leadership style wisely

The autocratic leadership style is often identified as overly demanding with essentially a one way street of communication. The leader is seen as a dictator and is normally focused on the accomplishment of goals through force, manipulation and even threats. Decision making is not shared and the mentality utilized is “do it or else”. However, the autocratic leadership style can be effective in the right situation. In fact, virtually all leaders will have to utilize this style at some time during their career.
This is a style of leadership that can be effective if used in the appropriate time and place. Emergency situations in the workplace that call for urgent action often require autocratic leadership. For example, if a manufacturing company receives a large order from an important customer that needs special attention in order to get filled with a quick turn-around, autocratic leadership is the answer.
An autocratic leadership style will allow for a focused and directed, short term goal oriented workplace. The employees are likely to allow for this style of leadership in the situation because of the short turn-around time. Communication will generally go one way – from boss to employees – during this time period. The autocratic style of leadership can become stressful to employees if utilized for long periods of time.
Utilized in the right time and place, the autocratic leadership style does have a place in every leader’s tool box. However, it is unlikely any leader will be effective utilizing this style as their predominant leadership style.
There are examples of leaders such as Joseph Stalin who are known for this style of leadership. They were put into a situation that called for or allowed for a decisive, dictatorial type of decision making leader and the autocratic style of leadership proved to be effective.

    The leadership style I use is a mixture of autocratic and democratic and is situational dependent. I feel it is an effective style due to the very nature of my work.     “Leadership style is a relatively consistent pattern of behavior reflecting a leader’s beliefs and attitudes. Although no two people act as leaders in precisely the same way, people do lead with three basic styles: (1) authoritarian (or autocratic), (2) democratic, and (3) laissez-faire” (Bebbe & Masterson, 2009, p. 290). Each of these different styles can affect group communication. First, is authoritarian, better known as autocratic. This particular Leadership style is used by people whom want control. They want to make the decisions and give the orders. This can be very detrimental in a group environment. People do not want to be bossed around. They do not want or expect to be told what to do when working in a group environment. They believe they will be able to offer input and to have their input thought about. With an Autocratic leader, this just does not happen. Sometimes you hear of leaders saying, “It’s my way or the highway.” This is very popular in this type of setting. This causes many conflicts within a group, including resentment and lack of creativity or contribution. However, sometimes this style works within groups especially if the leader is the most knowledgeable about a project. Next Democratic leadership style is the opposite of Autocratic. Within this style, leaders tend to have more confidence in their people. They want to hear their opinions and take their ideas to heart. Unfortunately, even though this is considered to be the best style to have; it can have some negative implications.
