Using Animals in Disease Research
Using Animals in Disease Research

People all over the world have different opinions on whether animal testing is an ethical way to research drugs and treatments or not. Almost every medical advancement has involved using of animals including discovery of penicillin, organ transplantation, vaccines etc. Scientists should use animals in disease research because nowadays it is the only right way to develop drugs, treatments and cures for diseases and to be sure that new products are safe to use.

The first reason why animals should be used in lab testing is that it is the best way to do the research not on human beings but on something that is very similar to humans by chemistry, cell structure and organization. Only drug testing on animals will shows maximally closest result to what will happen in the human's body. Perhaps we weren't be able to cure even very common diseases in present-day medicine without using animals in researches.

The second reason why scientists should use animals in their researches is that animal’s rights are still protected and they don't feel pain during the testing. According to Foundation for Biomedical Research, the Public Health Service Act, Federal laws, and Animal Welfare act controls the removal of pain. All animals used in procedures always relieved from pain by anesthesia. A well-treated animal provide more reliable scientific results, which is the goal of all researchers.

The last reason why using animals in research is necessary is that human beings are more important than animals. Animals quickly reproduce itself and they have short life cycle that help scientists to study effects of the drugs on several generations. Also animals can be donors of organs for humans. The society knows many facts in a last few years about transplanting of animal`s organs into human body.

The opponents of using animals in disease research might say that scientists could discover drugs using alternative methods such as computer models.

The scientific community is for animal testing because they see it that it is better for animals to suffer than humans. Animals greatly advance human medicine which is enough to overlook and justify animal suffering. On the other hand, those who are against testing products on animals see it as cruel. Researchers induce pain on animals, sometimes without the use of anesthetics. However, there is also a grey area where some people support it only under certain circumstances.…

The first reason why we shouldn’t have animal testing is because animals are getting hurt or abused. “Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year.” The chemicals that the people are using are burning or other worse things to them. The chemicals that they use on the animals could hurt or kill them. Over half of side effects cannot be detected in…

Animals should NOT be used for testing in labs. There are many reasons why this dilemma should stop. They have different bodies than humans so the tests may react different on them than on humans and that could lead to danger to people. I think if scientists have to lab test on something living then they should pick something overpopulated, but that still is not okay, therefore something needs to be figured out. Or instead of using helpless animals, they should use all natural products and take human volunteers willing to get tested on. Why risk poor helpless little animal’s lives? Why torture them? It is proven that animals are not the best test subjects to use.…

One important factor to consider is the issue on morality. I do agree that sometimes, animal testing can be cruel. But wouldn't testing new drugs on people be even more cruel? Wouldn't it be more cruel for them to die of the tests because there isn't enough information about a drug? Also, are not millions of animals killed yearly for food and other merchandise? In my opinion, medical research is a more justifiable death than feeding stomachs or sustaining the fashion industry. With the issue of cruelty at hand, it should be known that scientists care about the welfare of the animals being tested on. The testing is done under strict supervision and the law protects the animals from cruelty and mistreatment, so animal testing doesn't really entail animal…

There are some good things about animal testing; however, there are way more cons when it comes to using animals for research. Yes, animal testing has lead to many life saving treatments, but there are other testing methods that don’t require animals. Humans often make the misconception that we are genetically similar to animals. Animals are drastically different from humans, so they are very poor test subjects (Mieke). Drugs are required to pass a test before they can be used on animals, yet most drugs that pass the test are harmful to the test subjects (Mieke). The cons overcome the pros of researching on…
