Urban studies aims to develop an understanding the modern city metropolis. As Savage et al. have pointed out, the urban encompasses far more than just the physical city itself; understanding the city help us to understand many aspects of modern life (2003, pp.4). Many of its features, such as mass media and public transport systems have spread throughout society over the past century. Sociological studies of urban life began with the landmark publication of 'The City' in 1925 by sociologists Robert Park, Ernest Burgess and Louis Wirth from the University of Chicago, students of Georg Simmel who shared his belief that the urban environment changed man's personality and made relationships impersonal. They sought to explain different features of the urban environment within this theory and predict its development, starting with their own city Chicago, which they believed to be paradigmatic of new cities, designed to serve the needs of industrial capitalism (Park 1925, pp. 17, 40). Park and his colleagues posited a largely deterministic view of the city as a logically developing space ordered primarily by economic needs. Ernest Burgess developed the 'concentric zones model' to explain urban development and expansion of the modern city according to a predictable, ecological pattern (Burgess 1925). Louis Wirth has contributed to the school prominently in his essay "Urbanism as a Way of Life" in 1938, which sought to further develop a theoretical basis for the expanding field of urbanism (Wirth 1964, pp. 83). This text became one of the most influential works on understanding the social consequences of the city, and had real consequences; future sociologists have used his theory to help plan cities' layout (Knox & Pinch 2010, pp. 149). Although now over 80 years old and dated in many respects by economic change, the Chicago School remains highly influential in the urban studies today, which…

A few weeks ago, I was walking downtown, when this random came up to me and said “You in school? That’s good, that’s good. Education is important.” From the state of her hair and clothes, and the smell of her breath, I assumed she was homeless. I didn’t really pay much attention to her, because homeless people are so common in downtown Atlanta. I was just hoping that she wasn’t going to ask me for any money! After a while, I started thinking about what the homeless woman had said; “Education is important.” Growing up, I had always been taught that people who lived in the streets had been afforded the same opportunities as I had, but they had simply chosen to ignore them. So, if this woman had basically thrown away her life, why was she here preaching to me that education was important? How far had she gotten with her education? Was she like my great-grandmother, and lacked the skills to read and write? Literacy isn’t something that I spend a lot of time thinking about, mainly because all of the people that I surround myself and the people they surround themselves with are all capable of reading at proficient levels. Of course, I was always aware that some people had disabilities that made it harder to read, like dyslexia, but it never occurred to me that some of them allowed for the hindrance to completely turn them off to reading. Is it possible that I have been taking my literacy skills for granted? In this paper, I plan to explore literacy in America, and how it compares to the value other nations put on literacy and even our own country before public schools were instituted.…

In the small, Southern, towns of Maycomb, Alabama, education varies from family to family. Every family has a different take, on how they implicate education to their families and therefore creates a huge range of those who can read and write and those who cannot. In, To Kill A Mocking Bird by. Harper Lee, this range of education is demonstrated in many different ways.…

Desmond Tutu said it best – all children everywhere deserve a quality education which is one of their fundamental human rights. For many, it is truly impossible to understand the experiences of people who grow up without access to basic human necessities. We live in a time where centuries of suppressed inequalities are being brought to light and access to basic human rights is being threatened. The belief that a quality public education is a human right for all children, coupled with my own experience, is what motivates and inspires me to want to become an urban teacher.…

I haven’t get the opportunity of teaching on my own anywhere so far. However, the only opportunity that I used to be a teacher assistance volunteer for a research with the NYU, focusing on Latino from 5-10 years old and the chances to attend superior education. I observed several issues with children, nevertheless there was this particular child (Latino) who used several times “I hate black people” I was shocked, the child did not even want to sit close to black students. This particular child have a strong personality and he stated he rather be in the principal office than work with a black child. The teacher did not do anything about it, the teacher told me that she spoke with the parents and the parents stated if “the child does not like black people, what can we do about it; he learned all that from TV”. The teacher told me that she will not do much about it, because it is settle the parents wanted to raise the child in their own way.…

In believe that there is a big difference in inter-city school systems and rural school systems. The reason that I say that is because there are a lot of different issues that arise in each type of school. In the city there are a lot more gang related activities where as there may not be as much of a problem in rural school systems. Also I believe that the teachers teach and treat students differently depending on the environment that they are teaching in. There may also be problems with school funding and other issues that my lead to some of the problems.…

    Urban Education

Suburban schools are located in the suburbs and rural schools are located in small, rural areas. Urban Education is defined as education taught in a school located in the city (urban areas). These schools have numerous distinct traits that make them easy to be recognizable. The students that attend these schools come from a wide variety of homes, incomes, beliefs, morals, priorities and are mostly African American, Mexican, and Asian. Unlike suburban and rural schools, the classrooms in urban education are often overcrowded with over 30 students or more in each class. I believe that with so many students (from all different backgrounds) in one classroom, behavior problems are a constant issue. So many of these students suffer at home and mimic what they see at home once they leave that setting, which is normally the school. School may be the only place they feel they can be themselves. There are also many special needs students in these schools that do not receive the needed attention due to shortage on of special education teachers available. I believe that that UHD is correlating with the Urban Education because the demands for those teachers are high. Communities in urban area need educators that would be a great asset to the students. With the many differences, the Urban Education Program will help prepare obstacles we may face and help us to prepare for some of the things we may have never experienced, such as poverty. These schools do not get the upgraded book, and the newest technology. I have noticed that in many of my previous classes, we have not focused on activities that pertain to a book or advanced technology. Many of the activities that we do are hands on, mainly relies on our ideas and imaginations rather than…

Most of an urban people have higher income and better opportunities than small town people. Based on the location and surrounding of a person, it can influence his/her dreams, objectives, and goals. The person who grew up in New York City is most likely to have a dream of working in Wall Street (Investment firms, Banking, Business Analysis) or 5th Avenue (Designing, Modeling, and Retail Businesses). And the person who grew up in country side around farm lands is most likely to dream of becoming a great farmer or entrepreneur in farming business. The city people are more adapted to the diversities and changes because they’re more interrelated with constant changing of global businesses and global affairs. In the other hand, the country people are more content with their lives and more generous than city people.
