Upside Down is an amazing movie, written by Juan Solanas, which tells the story of Adam. A kid born in the world below and whose curiosity and drive leads him to explore beyond his world’s limit. One day he meets a young girl from the above world called Eden, they quickly become friends, and begin meeting each other on a daily basis in the same spot. As they grow this relationship becomes stronger, and finally fall in love with each other. This leads them to break the law and enter into each other’s planets. However one day they are discovered and attacked; during this attack Eden was shot and they are separated from each other, sending them to their corresponding worlds. Years after Adam sees Eden on TV and his heart begins beating faster, he just discovered she is still alive, and he is will to risk it all for her.
However the theme goes way beyond this. These two worlds represent a deeper meaning; they are a visual demonstration of the two different “worlds” that exist in our planet. The world below shows how the less privileged are separated from the privileged, and how just like in the movie there are many people who are against these worlds interacting. Within the movie we see how society tries to prevent the less privileged from ascending, and only exploit them, for their own selfish purposes. Sadly this is not far away from our reality and “Upside Down” brings the viewers a touch of consciousness and awareness of this problem that we all know, but choose to
