The characteristics of a leader like Ms. Jovita Carranza came through in her daily actions with those encircled by her personal and professional life experiences. Leaders come in all forms of varieties, genders, ethnicity and descriptors like Carranza. Carranza didn't stopped to think about some of the leaders that have inspired her or even some that have infuriated her, the qualities of her good leadership skills became apparent through her professional growth with UPS. When we think about the characteristic of a leader in today’s dynamic environment, we often think of leaders that are ever-changing. In my opinion a prime example of this was and/or is Carranza approach. Here values are simple but yet one that we all inspire to follow, she had and/or has that inspiration to continuously combust her career to surpass many obstacles. Often times’ leaders like Carranza are quiet and reserved who strategically insert their ideas in order to maximize a systems capability. Thus, embodying the vision of good leadership skills and calling upon each subordinate to act. The characteristics of her leadership are not abilities or conducts that will be new to those that seek to master them, but will often times be the actions we all know we should be focused on. She made time to aspire for higher goals by becoming open to promotions from state to state. Without a shadow of a doubt Carranza’s development of good leadership came with time. Exactly 30 years of team work and staff development, enabled her to climb the ladder to maximize her career opportunities. Without the commitment of investing time, very few people have and/or develop the skills to become the great leaders; like Carranza.

My background and role in the interview was to determine what it takes to be an effective leader. The central issue to understand before conducting an interview with any subject is to ask oneself these following questions. They include, who is this subject? What does he or she do? How does he or she work and what makes them who they are? Asking these questions also are important when one is conducting an interview with a leader of a health care setting or an organization. I as a restorative coordinator in a health care setting wanted to conduct an interview with a health care leader to understand what their role is in the daily operations of a health institution. I had some objectives, and they included, to find someone who had a hand in various projects within a health organization, a person involved with quality improvements, a person who implements ideas and a person who is involved with evaluating different health outcomes. I also wanted to interview a person who had enough staff members working under them. After considering these objectives, I made a decision to interview the director of nursing (DON) in my place of employment. This is a lady responsible for most of the clinical operations that occur on a daily basis in the health care institution. As I conducted the interview, I wanted to find out her personal philosophy of leadership, and her professional interactions with staff members including doctors, other health care managers, staff members and other auxiliary personnel involved in the health care institution. The director of nursing leadership style and some of the major financial, ethical, clinical, administrative and personal challenges involved with leadership would be discussed. Finally, the DON’s mentor if any as she aspired to become a leader and her advice to me to become an effective leader would also be discussed throughout this paper.…

Leadership can be defined as a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. All leaders essentially strive to complete the same tasks: provide direction, set goals, make a vision, build a positive environment, instill values, motivate, resolve conflict, and teach. James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2002) developed a survey that asked people which characteristics of leaders they look for, admire and would willingly follow. The results of the study showed that people preferred the following characteristics: honest,…

Throughout the worlds history there have been countless effective leaders. Many leaders are effective because they carry with them one trait that stand out to the people. Rosa Parks exuded her bravery when sitting in the front of the bus. Determination played a key role in Nelson Mandela’s leadership in South Africa. There are some leaders that hold more than just one trait, like Cesar Chavez. Everything Cesar Chavez experienced in his life made it possible for him to bear the qualities he had and affect the world during his career. His life experience gave Cesar the leverage to have the support of the migrant workers he was fighting for. From the starts of Cesar’s career to the end, he showed the world how he could relate to the migrant workers, his dedication to giving them their union rights, his selflessness in giving his whole life to the cause, and how influential he turned out to be to the world by actually making it happen.…

Destiny, with credit to Professor Nettifee brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who may believe they weren’t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their “True North.” The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from Howard Schultz of Starbuck’s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True North’s thesis, which is no one person is born a leader and there isn’t one path to becoming a leader. The book is separated into three sections: 1) Leadership is a Journey 2) Discover Your Authentic Leadership 3) Empowering People to Lead. Before giving overviews of each section, it is important to define an authentic leader.…

What is a leader? According to Kouzes and Posner, leadership is “the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for a shared aspiration”, and indeed, these men go further to posit that leadership transcends a certain mode of behavior, rather, that it is an active set of skills and qualities that is clearly apparent. (Kouzes & Posner, 2012) An essential quality then, is a quality in leader that is necessary to achieving the goal of inspiring subordinates to said struggle. This essay will attempt to identify the three essential qualities of leadership from a stimulus, namely an episode of Undercover Boss. The three essential qualities that can be extrapolated from the film are competency, charisma and consistency, as these skills have been shown to inspire colleagues to action and breed trust between the leader and his or her charges, which is key to successful communication (Bordum, 2005) which is the foundation for the execution of the former.…

Leaders recognize that their team members are the most appreciable asset in the organization, hence, recruitment is the 1st point of developing the right team. Leaders know exactly what characteristics and skills are needed in a person that will be the right “fit” for the success of the organization; and 5-The Pinnacle level, respect. People follow this leader because of “who” they are and what they have accomplished (n.p.). Without a doubt it can be said of S. Truett Cathy that he reached the pinnacle level of leadership.
