William’s victory at Hastings in 1066 was significant for the English language because it established French as the language of the upper class. Anglo-Saxon became the language of an under class, because of this, there ceased to be a standard Anglo-Saxon. English was used amongst the lower and middle classes and was a mark of inferiority. English began to be used in business and trade. London’s middle class initiated the new standard.…

In John Simon’s article he talks about the importance of using proper English and how its use has decreased over the years. Throughout the article he talks about how most people nowadays will communicate anyway they see fit even if it is grammatically incorrect. He also mentions that it is up to us to teach ourselves to properly speak English by training ourselves to memorize the correct form of English language and discipline our thinking. He states that those who often fail to speak properly are usually a minority group. The author’s targeted audience seems to be either the general public…
Jamila Lyiscott in the poem, Three Ways to Speak English, suggests that there are different ways to express the English language in their own “correct” way. Lyiscott supports her suggestion by explaining to the audience that she speaks in three different versions of english according to what place or situation she is in. The author’s purpose of writing the poem is to inform people about how speaking a different kind of English doesn’t make one inarticulate, in order to persuade people to stop thinking it does. Lyiscott writes in a humorous but urgent tone in order to convince “perfect” english speakers to stop calling hood or broken english dialects “inarticulate”.…

The social structure of Britain has been highly influenced by the concept of social class. In sociology, the term ‘social class’ is most often used to refer to the primary system of social stratification found in modern capitalist societies. Social stratification refers to ‘the presence [in society] of distinct social groups which are ranked one above the other in terms of factors such as prestige and wealth’.…

The concept of class society has been rooted in the history of The United Kingdom for a very long time. In fact, it can be considered as one of the basic characteristic features of the country. Standard English is a powerful tool that one can take and use from the arsenal of English Language; it is the benchmark that other “varieties” of English measure itself against and also allows us to form effective communication between communities and people that have different ways of speaking. The other “varieties” of English all fall under the category of nonstandard English, which is defined as “not conforming in pronunciation, grammatical construction, idiom, or word choice to the usage generally characteristic of educated native speakers of a language” Even though the definition hints that nonstandard English is less prestigious than Standard English, there are still many examples out there that help to show that there are certain advantages of using non-standard English over Standard. One, it helps to forge a person’s identity (whether it be through the use of slang or a certain type of speech) and secondly, it allows for information to be transmitted across to another party in a faster, more effective manner. Lastly, non-standard English helps the English Language to constantly evolve and adapt to the ever-changing world that we live in.…
Social class has played a large part in the history of the world. Many times in certain countries, the only way to attain a high social class was either to be born into a wealthy family or marry into a family with a high social class. Although most people generally think that members of a high social class have a lot of money, which most do, one could just have royal blood, have virtually no money, and still have a high class. This creates a system where the rich, powerful, and influential people stay…
Harvard law, MIT Engineering, Cornell medicine, or Stanford business school are my options. Well, not really. These tend to be the choices of upper-class New York families. They have societal standards to live up to. The most amazing part about these standards is that wealthy upper class creates them, and the rich upper class complain about their self-made standards. The same applies for social pressures. Most are created by us, based on the world around us. The Cuban Swimmer, Saga Volume 1, “The New,” and The Lawsuit all portray different standards and pressures in their storyline.…
African American Vernacular English, which is also known as the African American Language, Black Vernacular, Black Vernacular English, or simply Black English has been defined as an African American variety dialect (a variety of a language that is distinguished from other varieties of the same language by features of phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, and by its use by a group of speakers who are set off from others geographically or socially), ethnolect (a variety of a language spoken by a certain ethnic/cultural subgroup and serves primarily as a language, but can also be a distinguishing mark of social identity, both within the group and by outsiders), and sociolect (a variety of a language used by a particular social group) of American English. “Many non-linguists refer to African American Vernacular English as Ebonics which is a term that also has other meanings or strong connotations.” The pronunciations are most common to the Southern American English that is spoken by many African Americans and many non-African Americans in the Southeastern region of the United States. “As with all linguistic forms, African American English usage is influenced by age, status, topic and setting. There are many literary uses of this variety of English, particularly in African-American literature. African American English Vernacular shares several characteristics with Creole English language-forms spoken by people throughout much of the world. African American Vernacular English has pronunciation, grammatical structures, and vocabulary in common with various West African languages.”…
