Unrequited Love In Romeo And Juliet
One of the most popular and well-renown play by William Shakespeare is Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is a romantic tragedy play in which two star-crossed lovers’ deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. This play presents many different types of love which usually sparks conflict among the characters. Some types of love in the play include unrequited love, romantic love, friendship love, parental love, and love of family honor. The most common types of love displayed in Shakespeare’s works are romantic and unrequited love. These two different types of love are similar and different in many ways such as they can cause tragedies and conflicts. The first type of love and one of the most common is unrequited love. Unrequited love is when one person loves someone and the love isn’t returned back. People in the play that show unrequited love are Paris for Juliet and Romeo for Rosaline. Although they were not supposed to even see each other because their families are enemies, they like each other too much to hate each other. When they first met, they knew it was true love at first sight and kissed many times. A quote from the play that shows this is, “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? / Deny thy father and refuse thy name; / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2: ii: 33-6). This quote shows that Juliet loves Romeo so much that she would give up her name just for his love.
