Unna Monologue
The sea breeze. Fresh air. Friends. Family. These are the things running through my head as the Queen finishes her speech. Swimming in the sea. Running. School. Not really school. I won’t miss that. How are we going to see Family? And Friends? What about food? Mum can’t live without jam doughnuts. A million thoughts and questions race through my head as the Queen finishes her speech. No more school. No more walks along the beach. No more visits to friends and family. We have to stay home. We have to survive. Somehow.

“What going on?” Asks Leo, his big, blue eyes darting around the room. Suddenly, Carly bursts in, and the noise makes baby Isaac cry, until I go over to him and give him his dummy. He slurps it contently, satisfied, watching our sad faces. “Did you see that?” asks Carly, looking scared. It’s one of the first times I’ve seen her looking scared. “Yes. Does Mum know?” I reply, suddenly scared. Carly is one of the toughest people I know, if not the toughest. She never cries. She never gets scared. Not even at The Smiler ride at Alton Towers. Believe me. I know. If she’s scared, how are we going to cope? She practically runs this house. Mum’s always busy, going to job interviews. Her last boss was so mean. It was just after Dad died. Mum was really sad. She took a month off work, and when she went back she was fired. She’s been hunting for a job for three months now, so me and Carly are often given Leo, who is three, and Isaac, who is one to look after. “She’s at the supermarket.”

“It says: I just saw the speech. Don’t worry. Get the little ones in bed, then you go to bed yourself. I’ll be back soon. I can’t get a bus. Don’t worry. I love you, we’re going to be fine. Lots of love, Mum. That’s it.” Says Carly her voice breaking.
“I’ll get the little ones into bed. I say, as hoist Leo onto my back and scoop up Isaac, who is nearly asleep anyway. I’m so tired that as soon as I put them to bed, I myself crash and go to
