“Whap!” A spiraling red dodge ball crashes into my face and suddenly I am awake. The outcries from the eighth-grade girls around me pull me back into the packed room full of 200 middle schoolers. As I look around I realize there is no place I would rather spend my Friday mornings than volunteering with somewhat smelly middle schoolers as a Campus Life leader. Here, I discovered my passion for working with middle school students. They helped me discover that I wanted to change my major from Elementary Education to Middle School Education. Here at UNK, I am a part of SEAN and participate in student directed one acts. These activities are a fun break from studying and I plan on continuing with these activities throughout my years here at UNK. In high school, I …show more content…
I have been an assistant teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Acolyte leader. These positions have included teaching a small group of children from the age of three to ten about Jesus and being an altar helper or Acolyte. I have learned compassion working with these children that you cannot get anywhere else. Also at my church, I have gone on four mission trips. On these trips, I have done everything from making beds at a homeless shelter to setting up a firework tent during a thunderstorm. Through mission trips I have been given a servant’s heart and a love for serving.
I am hoping these experiences help me become a better middle school educator. Already in my career at UNK I have learned a lot about caring for my future students. Dr. Ziebarth-Bovill has taught me many ways to show my students the nurturing love of a good educator. I cannot wait to take more teaching classes to show my middle school students they have a caring adult who is passionate about their success. I have already experienced this feeling of pride in others’ success working with group of middle school girls who I watched them grow into beautiful freshmen

As a class, we have endured changes throughout the years from being split up in the classroom ( Port Allen on one side and Erwinville on the other) as if we were on the bus with Rosa Parks to being untied, from having a teacher and coming back from Christmas break wondering who was going teach us geometry, a change in administration, down to dances from the dougie to “jiggin” and now to dabbin. Through it all I am glad to say we made it; we survived ebola, Oscar Proud, the Predator, Maleficent. Ms. Morgan’s test, Ms. Roger’ solid advice, and the King of Shade worksheets Mr. Seal’s himself. Also for some of you relationship after relationship. All of these good…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. For some reason I got an excitement about doing this interview.…

I completed my observations at Concord Junior High in Mr. Eric Free's classroom. Mr. Free teaches 7th grade English and Language Arts. While in his classroom observing, I observed 5 different periods paying particular attention to the 1st hour class. Mr. Free's room was decorated and colorful. Above the chalkboard, he had various autographed photos that the students all found interesting in the first few weeks of class. There were newspaper clippings of all students in the school when they were participating in any type of school or non school event – church, sports, band, community service, etc. I found this incredibly important because not only is he recognizing students in the classroom for excelling…

Four years ago, I began my high school career not fully knowing who I was or what I wanted to become. Now, as a senior, I have discovered so much about myself through the clubs and activities which I am affiliated with. One of the touching moments in my time as a volunteer was when the BETA club helped to landscape the nursing home’s garden. The staff members and residents were so proud that the youth had come to beautify the area for them. I really started to understand that people feel better when they work for the greater good. Another life changing experience was getting to work with the Pre-Kindergarten students at Benton Elementary. At this point in my education, I had already been a member of the Future Teachers of America (FTA) club at my school for three years, but I still had my doubts about becoming a teacher.…

I observed Mrs. Collier’s first grade class at J.B. Hunt elementary on Thursday September 13, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated nicely. She had bright posters hanging on the wall as well as many colorful boxes, curtains, and chairs around the room. The desks were set up in one giant “U” with Mrs. Collier sitting in the middle. It was a great set up for the kids because they could easily see her and she could easily see them. The dynamics in the classroom seemed great because she connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. The students behavior seemed very respectful towards her and they listened when she asked them to do something. Mrs. Collier’s equity between her and her students was…
