    We Are Not Your Monkeys

The authors of the poem, “We Are Not Your Monkeys”, are attacking the caste system by identifying themselves with monkeys and demons. For a long time, caste system has been the core of Hindu society. The hymn, “The Sacrifice of Primal Man”, from Rig Veda has first explained the origin of the hierarchy:”When they divided primal Man/ …/ The Brahman was his mouth/ The arms were made the Prince/ His thighs the common people/ And from his feet the serf was born” (p. 32, line 41-48). It is believed by most of the Indians that the caste system is unchangeable because it is part of nature. Ever since the creation of the world, their social statuses have been decided. However, by the poem and the redefinition of the story, Ramayana, the poets provide a different perspective and reveal the absurdity of the caste system.…

The Bhagavad-Gītā has been an influential work in the Hindu religion since its completion in the first century B.C.E. Likely written in response to the growth of both Buddhism and Jainism in this time period, the Bhagavad-Gītā displays a new light towards how the lower castes in society can ascend to higher castes. Eventually those in the lower castes can reach the grand state of nirvana (Jeste and Vahia 198). Prior to the Bhagavad-Gītā, this possibility seemed unachievable to Hindus excluded from the Brahman caste. Numerous teachings are showcased throughout the text in the advice Krishna gives to Arjuna, leading Arjuna to the correct decision concerning his dilemma over whether or not to fight his brethren. By following these lessons, individuals of the lower class can climb the Hindu social ladder, giving followers of Hinduism similar ways to achieve good karma when compared to other impeding religions of that era. Interestingly, the Bhagavad-Gītā was likely written by priests and teachers of the Brahman caste. The creation of the work cost them some of their supremacy over the religion due to the greater appreciation for those of the lower caste. However, this individual or group of individuals probably wrote the Bhagavad-Gītā to stop the dilution of the Hindu religion as well as to address essential human characteristics as the world’s first philosophers and, perhaps, psychologists. With this intent in mind, the Bhagavad-Gītā applies to the Hindu religion as well as mankind. Insightful analysis of the Bhagavad-Gītā shows that it functions more as an allegory with numerous layers as opposed to literal Hindu scripture.…

The origins of Hinduism, centered on the relationship between Hinduism and the Indus Valley civilization, have always been fiercely debated amongst historians and scholars. The Indus Valley civilization flourished from around 2500 BCE to 1500 BCE (Flood, pg 23). However, without written records of this prehistoric civilization, we are unable to make accurate claims about the religious practices of this civilization. The people of the Indus Valley did have a form of writing, which has been found inscribed on steatite seals and copper plates, but we are currently unable to decipher this ancient form of writing (Flood, pg 27). Colin Renfrew makes the point that “in deciphering the script we need to begin with something known, but there are no bilingual inscriptions, so decipherers assume a solution and then try to demonstrate its plausibility” (Flood, pg 27). Logically, it follows that the relationship between the origins of Hinduism and the Indus Valley civilization can only be affirmatively known once we can accurately decipher the script as “such an insight could tell us about daily transactions and possibly something about religion, although individual sacred texts may have only been preserved orally” (Bowker, pg 26). There exists considerable debate about whether these writings belong to the Dravidian linguistic family or are an early form of an Indo-European language belonging to the Aryans (Flood, pg 27). Severe critics also question if the Indus Valley civilization was a precursor to modern Hinduism at all (Dasa).…

There are Indians that are now asserted that the Western analysis of Hinduism that’s been carried on by outsiders who have been biased against the Indian culture, or those who are presumed that all of the religions can be studied according to Western religious categories (pg. 71). The Hindu word “dharma” is often translated into English as “religion”, which refers to a broader complex of the meanings, which in turn encompasses the duty, natural law, social welfare, ethics, health, wealth, power, fulfillment of desires, and the transcendental realization (pg. 71). Looking into Hinduism further, it is not easily separated fully from other dharmic traditions that have been arisen in India that includes Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, because there has been an extensive cross-pollination among them (pg. 71).…

'A Visit to hill a Station' is an exciting experience. It gives a chance to live in the lap of Nature. In direct touch of Nature we can feel a divine peace and calmness in mind. It makes us feel to be lucky among millions who are over busy in world by affairs. India is a hot country. It is terribly hot during the months of May and June. The northern plains of India are very hot in these months. Hence a trip to some hill station is always tempting. Everybody likes to go somewhere in the lap of Nature to keep himself/herself away from the intense heat of the plains. But those who have money only they go to hills to enjoy their time whole heartedly. The hills not only give relief from heat but are also useful for health. God seems to smile through the beautiful and lovely scenes of Nature. In Northern India there are many hill stations like Nainital, Shimla and Mussourie etc. I had a great desire to visit Shimla. So, I with my friends, made a program to spend summer at Shimla. We reached Shimla in the morning. We went there in the month of June by bus.We made arrangements for our stay in a private house. It was on the top of the hill. The surroundings were very charming. We could see the beauty of Nature and hills; we could also see the lower portion of Shimla from there. We arranged a servant there. He swept the house and prepared tea for us. We had everything for cooking with us. We stayed at Shimla for ten days. We took a guide. After taking breakfast, we used to set out on sight-seeing. We came back at 2 p.m. and took lunch. The servant was a good cook. The pure air and greenery of the hills made us fresh. We had heard that rainy days of Shimla are more enjoyable. Hence we took pleasure of showers when it rained one day or two. It made us feel sensations of deeper joy. We enjoyed getting drenched. We came back, changed our clothes and took coffee. Shimla attracts a number of tourists due to its natural beauty. The Mall Road of Shimla and Jhaku hills are always…
