There are 4 main tissues types in the body these are Epithelial tissue , Connective tissue ,Muscle tissue and Nervous tissue .
Epithelial :This is composed of layers of cells that are tightly packed, this tissue lines the outside and inside cavities of the body.
Connective : This is composed of cells spaced by an extra – cellular matrix, this provides structure and support.
Muscle : This is a contractile tissue which is composed of different cells that contain myofibrils.
Nervous : This is composed of glial cells and neurones, this controls and co-ordinates the activities of the body.
The structure of epithelial tissue covers the whole surface of the body. Epithelia tissue is made up of cells closely packed and ranged in one or more layers. There is 7 different types of epithelial tissue found in the human body, they are Simple squamous, Simple Cuboidal, Simple Columnar, Transitional, Stratified squamous, Stratified cuboidal and Pseudostratfied columnar. Epithelial tissue can be divided into two groups depending on the number of layers of which it is composes. Epithelial tissue which is only one cell thick is known as simple epithelium. If it is two or more cells thick such as the skin, it is known as stratified epithelium. There are 7 types of epithelial tissue as the diagram shows.
simple squamous epithelial tissue is only one cell thick and it is know as the thinnest type of epithelial tissue. Simple squamous epithelial cells are thin and flat, which allows them to have a large surface area that is exposed to the lumen on one side, and to the basement membrane on the other. squamous epithelial cells function as mediators of filtration and diffusion. Due to their simple and thin construct, they allow for easy trans membrane movement of small molecules.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A cut is made perpendicular to the surface of the cell this would show that the cells are equally wide as they are tall, creating a square profile with a spherical nucleus at its centre . Simple cuboidal cells are classified as simple since they consist of only a single layer of cells. Cuboidal epithelium job is to line the surface of various glands and organs.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Simple columnar epithelial cells are longer than they are wide. The cells are connected by tight junctions. columnar epithelial job is to act as protection.
Transitional epithelium is stretchy like elastic and as the bladder fills up with urine the cells gradually begin to stretch and go from being several cells thick, to being a full stretch one cell thick. The transitional epithelium job is to accommodate fluctuation of volume of the liquid in an organ or tube, such as the urinary bladder. Stratified Squamous Epithelial
A stratified squamous epithelium consists of epithelial cells arranged in layers upon a basal membrane. Only one layer is in contact with the basement membrane. The epidermis of the skin is made of stratified squamous epithelium. This makes sure the skin is constantly regenerating. Well the function of stratified squamous epithelium consists of several layers of cells, which will all protect the areas of the body It can be found in areas such as the oesophagus, mouth, and the skin. Stratified squamous can be found in the skin.
Epithelium is a tissue that is made up of different types of cells. It forms the inner lining of body cavities and hollow organs, and it covers the body and organs as well. Epithelial tissue can also referred to as avascular tissue because it has no direct supply of blood.
