1. Understand partnership working.

1.1 Identify the features of partnership working.

There are many features that will make up partnership working, all of them important to ensure that the partnerships you have within your own setting work to achieve the best possabile outcome for the children and their families that attend.

working in partnership is a key element of practice within the early years sector. Early years professionals need to understand the importance of promoting autonomy with individuals, and they also need to be aware of their own roles and responsibilities and how they relate to others within this sector.

Every setting should therefore think creatively about how to involve individuals and outside services in the delivering and planning of their service. The setting needs to invest time and effort in effective partnership working, this will ensure that the families and children accessing the provision will be placed at the centre from the moment they first fill in an enrolment form.

The whole team should share a common purpose and vision to improve the families and individuals life.

Effective partnership working involves many features including: Trust
Empathy
Respect for the skills and contribution of colleagues
communication
effective listening skills
realistic expectations
clear objectives
honesty
working to agreed practice
There are various theories to partnership working and these include areas such as team working, avoidance of social loafing, avoidance of group think and supportive approach.

Partnership working theories

The team roles that Meredith Belbin identified are widely used in organisations. They are used to identify people's behavioural strengths and weaknesses within the workplace. The information gained from using this type of team role can be used to:

Build productive working relationships
select and develop high preforming teams
raise self awareness and personal effectiveness
build mutual trust and understanding
aid the recruitment process

Social Loafing

The tendency of some people within a team is to put less effect in,this is because they believe that their underperformed will not be noted. The phenomenon of one staff member getting a free ride while the others do all the work! Some of the factors that increase loafing are:

Lack of identifiability
no individual evaluation
task is easy, boring,or the same as before
individual contributions are not taken or listened to
large group
unfamiliar group
new member of the team
Factors that can reduce loafing are:
individual identifiability
individual and group evaluation
tasks are new and exciting
individual contributions essential
small group

Group think

Group think is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people. It is the mode of thinking that happens when the desire for harmony in a decision making group over rides a realistic appraisal of alternatives. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative ideas or viewpoints. Antecedent factors such as group cohesiveness, structural faults and situational context play in the likelihood of whether or not the group think will impact the decision making process.

1.2 Explain the importance of partnership working with:
Colleagues

Within a pre-school setting good working partnerships within the team are esstional to the setting providing an outstanding service that improves the life's of the families and children who access the provision.

Within a setting that has a team who work well together and have built trust and good communication, where the individuals in that team feel valued and the ideas that they bring to the table are made to feel worth while then a setting will run to its full potential.
