Introduction

What is Independent Learning?
As you will now be aware college is very different to school, one of the most important differences is that you are now expected to be able to study in a much more independent way. You are required to become responsible for your own learning. This means that we will not always provide you with all the information, you are expected to find out much of the information yourself. This means that lessons may require you to work in groups or individually to research a topic and then feed this back to the rest of the group.

Don’t panic! We do understand that this is quite a big adjustment for you to make, therefore the Independent Learning unit has been designed to help with this transition (change).

The independent learning unit is a unit like any other on the course, so you will have to work hard to produce evidence and you will be given a grade of pass, merit or distinction at the end by your tutor. However the independent learning unit is different to other units in many other ways……...

How is it different?
As this unit is all about how you learn, it has been built-in to all the units that you will study in your first year. This means that this unit will be something that you will work on all year, rather than for just one semester like all other units. It is designed to compliment (support) your work in other units, therefore helping you to progress and receive higher grades as you go through the course.

This unit is also different because it will not be taught in the usual 3 hour lesson per week system that we have for all other units. Instead this unit will be built-in to the tutorial system and the other units that you study. Your tutor is responsible for the assessment and grading of this unit, however your other unit lecturers will also cover information that will contribute to
