Unit 4222-205 Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care (HSC 024)

Outcome 1 Know how to recognise signs of abuse:

1. Define the following types of abuse:
Physical abuse
Sexual abuse
Emotional/psychological abuse
Financial abuse
Institutional abuse
Self neglect
Neglect by others
Physical Abuse – includes hitting, slapping, kicking, pushing, mis-use of medication, inappropriate restraint or inappropriate sanctions.
Sexual Abuse – includes rape and sexual assault, contact or non-contact sexual acts to which the vulnerable adult has not consented, or could not consent or was pressurised into consenting.
Psychological / Emotional Abuse – includes threats of harm or abandonment, deprivation of contact or communication, humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, coercion, harassment verbal abuse, isolation or withdrawal from services or supportive networks.
Financial Abuse – includes theft, fraud, exploitation and pressure in connection to wills, property or inheritance or financial transactions, or the misuse or misappropriation of property, possessions or benefits.

Institutional Abuse – indicated by repeated instances of unsatisfactory professional practice, persuasive ill treatment or gross misconduct indicating an abusive climate.

Neglect – includes ignoring medical or physical care needs, failure to provide access to appropriate health, social care or educational needs, the withholding of the necessities of life, such as medication, adequate nutrition and heating.

Self-Neglect - the result of an adult’s inability, due to physical and/or mental impairments or diminished capacity, to perform essential self-care tasks including: providing essential food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; obtaining goods and services necessary to maintain physical health, mental health, emotional well-being and general safety; and/or managing financial affairs (NAAPSA, 1991, p 3).
