For this outcome I have been asked to explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
It is important to have effective communication with children, young people and adults in order for them to feel comfortable and to enable us to have positive relationships with them. Below are the reasons as to why this should be done for children, young people and adults.
We should always come across as positive in front of children as this shows children that we can communicate easily. If we come across as negative to the children, they won’t feel comfortable enough to speak to us about anything; therefore we should always try to be positive around them. This will ensure them that we are there to help them if and when they need it. Effective communication brings understanding, which allows there to be better communication. Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication. Listening cannot only allow the person to understand what is being said, but also the way the speaker is feeling. If a child has misbehaves and we speak to them in a sad tone, they will understand that their actions have hurt us. On the other hand when speaking to a young adult they are usually able to understand by your body language how you are feeling. But here effective communication is necessary, as young people need to be spoken to in a certain way for them to listen and understand what is being said. Communication is also very important for adults in order for them to understand each other and know what is being said as well as how it is said. As adults, we often misunderstand what is being said between people; therefore we can get the wrong idea, which leads to issues within people.
The principles of relationship building with children and adults are that if other people are comfortable in the company of one person, effective communication is more likely to exist between them. If people do not get along with each other, they are more than likely to avoid each other.
On a daily basis, within schools we build relationships with people in a number of different ways. These are:
Effective Communication – this area is key for developing relationships with others. For children, effective communication is a must, we need to be able to communicate with them in order for them to understand what we are saying to them, what we are asking them to do or what is expected of them.
We also need to have effective communication with young people, as they need to be approached differently. They need to be spoken to in a different manner to children, as they need to understand and listen to what is being said.
Adults need to have effective communication, as they need to be able to understand how the other person is coming across Showing Respect – in order for positive relationships to be developed with other, it is very Important to respect each other and to listen to the point of view of others. There may be children, young people and adults from different cultures; we need to take into consideration when we’re talking to them as they have different beliefs and values to us. With children, we would need to talk to them at an eye level and have a reassuring face in order for them to feel comfortable when talking to us, this will also enable them to open up to us.
We also need to show young people respect as they are at an age in which they are more secluded. We need to assure them that they can trust us. We also need to show respect in the way we talk to them in order for them to respect us back. If we don’t show them any respect, they are less likely to show us any. This can make communication between the two very difficult. Adults also need to be shown respect when being spoken to. If two adults are having a conversation and there is no respect between them, then this is visible and there...
