Unit 12 Diet
E1: Describe the main food groups that are essential to meet the basic needs of the body.
Include each of the main food groups and say why they are essential for health and well being.

Starchy Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates are natural sugars which help give the body energy. Carbohydrates and rich in fibre and their main function is to provide the body with energy. Carbohydrates are foods such as, bread, cereals, potatoes, pasta. Carbohydrates are beneficial for the digestive system, as it speeds up the process.
Carbohydrates are converted into glucose, the form of sugar.
Carbohydrates are in two sources: Simple carbohydrates and Complex carbohydrates.

Meat, fish, poultry and alternatives- Proteins should be eaten every twice a day. They are used in the body to build and repair tissues. Also protein helps to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Protein is also found in all body fluids. You need proteins in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones.
Alternatives are a second class protein. This means that they are all made from vegetables and it isn’t from a killed animal, such as Quorn and lentils.

Fruit and Vegetables contain natural sugars as well as fibre. They are part of the 5 a day. Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals which help to reduce illnesses. The intake of fruits and vegetables reduce heart diseases, strokes and some cancers. They also contribute into a healthy and balanced diet. They are usually low in calories and fat. They help to maintain a healthy weight.

Milk and dairy products are a source of calcium. They help to maintain strong teeth and bones. Without having any dairy products, they teeth and bones would start becoming weak. It contains Proteins, fat and vitamins A and D. Also, helps the muscle and nerve function. This is the reason for babies having milk as it helps their growth and helps to
