1.1 Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle. 300-500 words.

I teach physical intervention training. This is a training programme aimed at learners who work with challenging behaviours that challenge their services. The organisation that has commissioned the training provides me with the learners needs. A required health questionnaire helps me to identify any learners who would need extra support to undertake the training safely, such as a hearing impairment. This would enable me to cater for the learning styles of all the learners. The environment is chosen by the learner’s organisation, with specifications from me regarding the size and facilities that are required.

Training is planned to meet the needs of the learners so all outcomes are met in the time allowed. My role as a trainer is to devise a structured plan of physical intervention techniques and methods that are required by the learner’s organisation. Handouts are designed around the techniques taught and the legalities of physical intervention. It is paramount that I am aware and comply with all legislation relevant to physical intervention training. The induction is done with the learners in a circle, by doing this everyone is facing each other and are all equal and no learner is excluded, I include myself within the circle, and from time to time change position, so there is no favouritism. I introduce myself and explain my role as a trainer, and get the learners to introduce themselves to each other. I explain the course content; I go through health and safety procedures, the environment such as break/lunch times, the plan of the training and the specified time period. I introduce an ice breaker at the start of the warm up exercises, as most learners can feel embarrassed, but it brings fun and this makes the learners become a group.

I have now identified the needs of my learners. Due to the content of the physical intervention techniques, I teach by demonstration, giving instruction and hands on approach. By this delivery it gets the learners motivated and this creates positive training throughout.

I assess and monitor learner’s progress and performance and the competence of skill of each technique taught. I continually ask questions throughout to test the learner’s knowledge and understanding. I maintain progress records and give feedback at every opportunity.

At the end of the course each learner is required to fill out an evaluation form, whereby learners have the opportunity to say how they felt about the course, including content, delivery and any feedback they feel relevant. I evaluate the feedback sheets and my own records. This is predominantly a management tool that allows me to reflect on my own performance and to make changes.

For the learners who don’t reach the required standard, I refer them, I give advice, and encourage them to undertake the training again.
Another boundary within my teaching role, is to avoid touching learners, but within physical intervention training this is required and it’s my responsibility to advice the learners of this. As a trainer I would remain professional and maintain confidentiality at all times, and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.

‘Abandoned’ ‘blind’ ‘darkness’ ‘challenges’ ‘overwhelmed’. These five words are the best words in both of these extracts do describe what is happening in both texts. The first noticeable thing in both extracts Blood River from page 216 to 218 and heart of darkness 48- 50, is the link of the theme of danger to the settings being used in both texts. Evidence of this is in heart of darkness when the text says” the night came suddenly and stuck you blind” ‘it seemed unnatural” ‘ a white fog, very warm and clammy, more blinding than the night’, ‘very loud cry, as of indefinite desolation’. In contrast blood river also says ‘ the Congo’ ‘flicker of lightening’ ‘angry looking clouds’ ‘limbs all folded together for warmth like the blades on a Swiss army knife’. So the instant direction of attention is to the settings of both of these texts, both characters were in dangerous situations faced with challenges that were overwhelming.…

The role of a Driver Trainer often brings you into close contact with small groups of learners, in a closed and personal environment and for extended periods of time. The need to create an open and relaxed environment is important, especially during ERDT, but this could lead to a blurring of boundaries between teacher and learner. It is important that you are aware of this and maintain the authority to be able to control situations safely when teaching in a moving vehicle environment.…

The organisation that the research will be aimed at is a charity within the health and social care sector. The training methods are aimed particularly at staff that support individuals (service users) with learning difficulties and autism to live independently in their own homes. The support ensures that these individuals live life to the maximum in all aspects of their lives. As the individuals being supported are vulnerable, the support provided is legislated under Protection of Vulnerable adults (POVA) and managed by Care and Social Standards Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW), therefore there are many elements of training that are mandatory. Currently the training provided is primarily made up of the more traditional ‘off the job’ classroom environment sessions.…
