Unfriendly Umbrella In the article Umbrella’s Shade Doesn’t Prevent Sunburn,on sciencenews.org, Lela Nargi discusses how the sun can damage your skin even if you are in the shade. The question of whether the sun damages you under an umbrella was brought up when a 13-year-old girl from New York said she would rather stay under an umbrella then apply sunscreen. The article was published February 27, 2017.
A study was done based on whether the umbrella really protects you. Hao Ouyang ran a study to see what form of sun protection is the most effective. He started the experiment by giving a set of people 100 SPF and the other set beach umbrellas. These people were told to either wear this sunscreen and stay in the sun, or to stay in the shade
