The Victimization Theory that would best explain why Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Hayley Petit, and Michaela Petit were chosen as victims by Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes is the Theory of Passive Precipitation. This theory states that a victim may be unknowingly exhibiting characteristics that would provoke an attack from a criminal. In this particular case, Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughter, Michaela Petit, were out on a routine grocery run when they drew the attention of Joshua Komisarjevsky. The first is the initial sighting, where upon Joshua Komisarjevsky’s attention is drawn to Jennifer Hawke-Petit and Michaela Petit. It is done so because Michaela Petit is a minor, who was eleven years old at the time. Her age interested Joshua Komisarjevsky who is a pedophile. Pedophilia is the sexual attraction towards children, several of those who had made Joshua Komisarjevsky’s acquaintance, including a young woman he’d had sexual relations with and her father, stated that they knew this to be the case. Joshua Komisarjevsky, later acted on this perverse predilection when he proceeded to rape a bound Michaela Petit. There was plenty of DNA evidence that he committed the crime, and then poured gasoline on Hayley Petit, and Michaela Petit, setting their home on fire and burning both girls alive. The second time that the Theory of Passive Precipitation comes into play is when one considers the affluence of the Petit family. Both Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes had a long history of breaking and entering into the homes of those in a higher income bracket. Whether petty thievery, such as breaking into cars for laptops and the likes, like Steven Hayes.
