In our country many persons are unemployed. Their number is very large. Unemployment problem is a great problem in our country.
There are many causes of unemployment. The chief among them is the rapid growth of population. Chances of employment are decreasing day by day due to the use of machines which save labour.
Lack of skill and ability is another cause of unemployment. An unskilled labour cannot be successful in any work. If a chance of employment is created, only the skilled labour avails it.
Our system of education is also responsible for the problem of unemployment in our country. Vocational subjects are not compulsorily taught in school and college. Students are reading some superficial subjects and are trying to get through with high marks. Their attention is on securing marks, not on the effectiveness of the subject in their practical life.
Ill health is another factor of unemployment. Major of the Indians do not get proper treatment of their illness Physical fitness is a criterion for getting a job. Nowadays more and more industries are set up in our country. Although there are chances of employment there, the hazardous atmosphere of the industrial area discourages people to go for employment there.
Employment opportunities and income levels have been a key factor in the growth of youth homelessness. Homeless young people experience severe disadvantages in the labour market and a high proportion are unemployed. Surveys among single homeless people have consistently found that between 80 and 90 per cent are unemployed.
The economic position of young people in relation to adults has declined substantially since the 1970s. Young people at the bottom end of the labour market with few qualifications have been the most affected, particularly young men. The main factor has been the collapse of youth labour markets. Whilst youth unemployment fell overall in the mid-1990s, unemployment levels of more than 30 per cent have persisted for many years among young people in some deprived areas.
Immigration: Immigration from the European Union has been blamed for reducing the number of seasonal summer jobs available for university students.
Lack of qualifications: A report by Centre links youth unemployment and poor results in GCSE English and Maths.
Lack of experience: Recruiters becoming more risk averse and looking to recruit more experienced older staff.
I emphasized the need to design development strategies that would bring greater benefits to the poorest groups in the developing countries particularly to the approximately 40% of their populations who are neither contributing significantly to economic growth nor sharing equitably in economic progress.
