The UPA government make a deal with the Russians to create a medium multi role Transport Aircraft which can replace the Aging An 32 turboprop cargo planes from the Indian Airforce, The Russian government and the Indian defense ministry announces the MTA deal under a joint venture, which can be used for both Indian and Russian Air force and possible export to other country's, the announce made by former defense minister AK Antony in Russia during his official visit in 2009.

Both of them agreed to share the program cost which is expected to be nearly $600 millions, and initial requirements set by both Indian and Russian air force officials, like the payload, engines, and Size. also both agreed

The MTA having unique capabilities of Cargo, Troop and medievac. It can airlift some 20 ton of heavy cargo over 2000 kilometers with the speed of about some 800 kilometers per hour. which can cover almost all over India with out being refuels, also it comes with in flight refueling system to refuel in the mid air, because of possible long range para dropping missions and coming back to the bas with out landing any nearby airbase, where those air strips lacks of supports to handle the Transport aircrafts.

The MTA can airlift some 90 of fully armed Para troopers can drop the Para troops in High to low altitudes, where the MTA can fly over some 42,000 feet which can easily bypass Anti Aircraft gun fire and manpads. also can stay in the high altitudes making them as a civil aero plane confusing enemy Air traffic

The MTA can lift 20 Ton so it's easy to lift and drop infantry combat vehicles and troop support vehicles, it can be para dropped from the Air or can be roll on from the MTA with the help of unique ramp configuration. with the Short take of Landing capabilities the Aircraft can be easily take off and Land in small air strips, but due to the Turbo fan engines it can face problems because of foreign objects. a slight disadvantage but the Turbofan gives higher altitude and more speed than the Turbo prop engines.

After completion of the preliminary design works completed there is no news about the projects for the past some three years, makes the Project shelved or canceled, due to this delays IAF went for Ukraine to upgrade the An 32 fleet, which can serve the Air force for another some fifteen years.

As per earlier reports HAL and UAC plans to role out the first Prototype by 2017, and within a year it can be expected to be inducted into the Service, while two protypes would be delivered to HAL for further
