A2
Answer the following questions.
1. What is the difference between ‘sequence’ of development and ‘rate’ of development? The sequence of development refers some aspects of development following a definite sequence. This is most obvious in physical development of babies, who must be able to lift their heads before they can sit unsupported or that a toddler must be able to walk before they run. The same can be said for communication where a baby must begin to recognize words before they begin to produce them. So while these sequences of development are typical in all children, it is the individual child who will determine the rate at which they develop these skills, with some developing at a quicker rate than others for one skill but slower in another. 2. Why is the difference important?

Understanding the difference between rate and sequence is especially important when working with children and young people to note both of these as we assess and observe the child in the setting. It allows us to see where a child is in their development as well as what they should be, allowing the setting to provide the right support in the areas it is needed most. All children develop at different rates but will tend to follow the same sequence, we use this as a base line to assess the child’s developmental patterns allowing us to intervene with extra help where necessary.
