Understand principles of professional development
1.1
In order for us to continually improve we first need to be able to reflect on our current professional practice. Being able to reflect allows us to identify what we are doing well and where we need to or might like to improve; it also allows us to ensure we are meeting all necessary standards and expectations within the organisations policies and procedures and current health and social care standards. CPD is paramount for my career and increases my chance of promotion and employability within my sector.
Expectations are forever increasing and policies and procedures are constantly being updated, this provides us with the need to continually improve our knowledge and development. Identifying where we need to develop further is crucial and once we have done this the next challenge is providing the relevant training /support.
1.2
Although there are lots of opportunities within and outside our organisation for professional development we face many barriers-
Organisational barriers: * Time restraints * Lack of resources or funding * Staff shortage * Poor organisation * Lack of or poor staff monitoring/ supervisions/appraisals
Personal barriers * Confidence * Financial * Family commitments/ childcare * Transport issues * Language barriers * Learning difficulties * Poor attitude
Providing staff with allocated time for learning and development, assessing within the workplace, supporting those with learning needs, funding/sponsoring training and education and providing sources and systems of support are some of the ways we as an organisation can overcome these barriers.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is essential for all staff working in health and social care. So what is CPD? Find a definition, reference it and explain why CPD is so important in health and social care. Consider different policies and procedures and ways of working, why should staff be continuously learning? Link to your placements and the different types of service users, do you think there are often changes with how things should be done? Consider service user’s needs, and also how they might communicate (again, keep making links to your placements). Also, equality and diversity, funding, practical care skills and life-saving skills for example. Do they all stay the same? How will we know if things have changed? Finish off with an overall conclusion.…

Reflection on your own practice is important because it allows you to assess what you are doing well, identify areas where you might like or maybe need more training or guidance in to ensure you are performing to the best you can, and are meeting all standards and expectations within the care settings policies and procedures. It helps you think about what you are doing in the setting and to always be aware of how you work with the service users and colleagues. Reflecting on your practice can enhance and improve your confidence and self esteem because you can look at what you are doing well, the things you have learnt and achieved and feel good about yourself especially if you have done something with ease that you used to find difficult, if you have done something you never did well in or something that you have never tried before. This then gives you confidence to continue working well and to aim to try other new things or to use what new skills or knowledge you have gained in your practices. As humans, we naturally reflect on our surroundings and experiences. It is a learning tool that will help us improve our skill and develop our knowledge and practice. Also it is important to find your strengths and weaknesses so that you can develop and improve on them, so you can make your weakness your…

Reflection is an important tool for all health care practitioners. It can improve our skills and help us understand the choices we make while in practice. Williams (2001) states that “Reflective learning involves assessment and re-assessment of assumptions and critical reflection occurs whenever underlying premises are being questioned”. Critically reflecting on events we experience will continually add to our understanding and knowledge base. “Reflection makes the practitioner mindful of their practice, encouraging analysis and increasing self-awareness in relation to our own skills, knowledge and emotions”. Price, (2005).…
