Uglies Westerfeld Analysis
Three hundred years from now, one girl by the name of Tally must decide from being surgically beautiful, and living the rest of her life being ugly but with her friend. In the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, Tally begins as a 15-year-old girl who eagerly awaits her 16th birthday where she will turn pretty. On the day of her “Sweet 16”, the Special Circumstances people pick her up rather than the doctors. Everybody receives the surgery in which doctors basically cosmetically reconstruct him or her on their 16th birthday. Some people, however, run away to “The Smoke” where nobody is pretty and they live just like normal human beings. This journal will consist of Tally’s search for comfort and reassurance, friendship, and her search for the physical …show more content…
She was always comforted by her fathers Middle Pretty structure and overall look. She firmly believes that all Middle Pretties have the answers to everything, are the wisest people, and always know what to do. She noticed her fathers reassuring glare break for a split second after she told him she was considering going to the smoke with Shay never becoming pretty rather than being pretty and ruining the lives of all citizens of the smoke. Her parents obviously wanted their daughter to be normal as are the rest of the citizens of their home city. They didn’t want to be known as “The Parents Who’s Daughter Ran Away to Live in the Wilderness.” Tally has not yet made a decision whether or not to stay in the Smoke or return to the city after she sells out everybody and the location of the …show more content…
Tally decides to “rat out” her friend. She departs 3 days after her 16th birthday and must arrive fast enough so nobody becomes suspicious that she arrived late and is still an “Ugly”.The directions are based off of she and Shay’s experiences together. It is sort of written in code. The officials from Special Circumstances loaned Tally one of their hoverboards that are capable of flying much faster than any board that any other person has so she can make good time travelling to the Smoke. Tally has to make a few educated guesses along the way and ends up choosing the correct route all the way to the meeting area where Shay and David, the ‘mayor’ of the Smoke, will lead her the rest of the way to civilization.
Tally had many searches throughout the plot of this book. Her search for friends, comfort and reassurance, and The Smoke are only a few on the list. She is in quite the predicament between betraying her new best friend and never turning pretty. I have not read far enough ahead to be able to write about what she chooses, but it is beginning to look like she will choose staying in the smoke with Shay and being ugly

She is sent out to break her promise with Shay that she wouldn't tell, but all Tally wants is to be pretty. So she is willing to betray her friend. Tally uses the clues Shay left behind for her, the first clue is "Take the coaster straight past the gap". Which is easy for Tally to understand because her and Shay snuck out one day into the abandoned world and Shay showed Tally what we used to call a roller coaster. They rode on it using their hover boards, but then there was a break or gap in the coaster. So every clue that Tally was given is something personal to the two of them that only they would know. Every clue was like this, even though some might be harder to figure out. Like one clue which required Tally to make her “worst mistake”. The only thing Tally could think of was taking her hover board off the cliff and into the ocean which sounded life threatening. Tally slowly got closer to the water trying to see if her hover boards connection would last but then suddenly she felt the board give out and let her free fall to the icy waters below. But right before she hit the water Tally and the board stopped. There must've been some sort of iron deposit under the water but falling definitely seemed like it was going to be her worst…

Michele Serros was born in 1966 in Oxnard, California. Serros was raised in Hispanic Community. Historically, Oxnard was originally inhabited by Native Americans the same location in which the story is being portrayed and also during Serros late childhood and mid-teens because, it was during the time when Radio frequencies named Citizens Band were popular. The narrator’s ancestors are obviously Indians because she explains how her nose looked “less Indian” with time because of her repeatedly squeezing her nose. This sort of action makes me believe that she is self-conscious about her appearance and how others may see her. She also describes her nose as hideous, less Californian. I can relate to her though because who doesn’t want to look beautiful? Who doesn’t want to be socially accepted? I personally don’t like my height or body shape and I feel that others see the same. Everyone has an image or idea on how one must look and how one must live such as perfect height, hair, eyes, weight, perfect parents with the prettiest house and the narrator believes that her best friend Terri had all these features. The girl looked up to Terri and loved going over to the house by how she described her feelings every time she arrived at Terri’s house and how she felt when she found out Terri’s father left her mother for another woman by saying “Who’d wanna leave a house that smelled like a pine forest and always had pudding pops in the freezer” (Pg.32)…
