Uglies In the novel Uglies, Tally Youngblood (ugly) feels she is ugly because society put that label on her. This book helped me in many ways one of them was not judging people just because they don’t compare to my standards. Before I had read this book whenever I saw what I thought was an unbalanced couple where the guy or girl was too pretty for the other. I would tell my brother that they don’t belong together because she’s too pretty for him, how did he end up with her, or why would she date someone so ugly compared to her. Now whenever I see a couple or I’m talking to one I ask them how they ended up together and whether they are in love. I don’t judge people anymore on how they look but their personality. When the whole society put the label of ugly on Tally and she sees what she thinks is pretty she believes she is ugly. She is able to pick out all the defects of any person she’s friends with including herself. Another factor trying to make Tally turn pretty is her best childhood friend, Peris, when she sneaks into Pretty Town and finds Peris and he asks her to promise him that she’ll turn pretty. When she sneaking out of Pretty Town she meets a girl named Shay (ugly) who she eventually becomes best friends and learning they both have the same birthday. Tally talks about how they get to become pretty on the same day but Shay has a different idea. Shay knows of another town called the Smoke where the mysterious David lives. Tally doesn’t believe her so Shay takes her out to meet David. Shay’s confidence drops when David doesn’t show up twice when they signal him. Eventually a couple days before they turn Shay runs away to the Smoke and leaves directions for Tally if she wants to come. The day arrives and Tally goes to the operation room but is pulled out by this place called Special Circumstances. They want Tally to help them find the Smoke

Scott Westerfeld’s book, Uglies takes place in a dystopian version of earth with advanced technology. Tally, the main character, is an average ‘Ugly’, a name for children/teenagers under the age of 16. Once a teenager turns 16, they go through a procedure that makes them impossibly pretty, which is the new ‘average’ look. Tally wants to be a pretty, but her friend Shay does not, due to many reasons. Shay unknowingly ruins Tally’s chance to turn pretty after escaping the city, managing to avoid the procedure. Tally’s procedure gets delayed and she is blackmailed into hunting Shay down to the place she escaped to and eventually betray her. One lesson taught through that is that when you underestimate yourself or judge yourself due to other people, your judgement can be affected by that and you can do something you could regret.…

Appearance is everything, the way someone looks, talks, and acts all make up who they are as a person. When someone does something the way they are seen often affects the outcome and consequences of their actions. This is seen very often in both Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. The main characters in both of these novels do awful things but their physical appearance, mindset, and whether they are a good or a bad person affects the way they are treated. The way society sees a person's overall appearance too often changes the way their actions are seen and dealt with and how they are treated as well.…

Many people in modern society struggle with appearance and acceptance which is often the root of most eating disorders, depression, and body issues. In the world that we live in today, prejudice and stereotyping has a great impact on our perspectives of others. Every day, people are criticized and judged on their appearance based their body weight, their height and the way we look. I myself have also experienced judgement due to my physical appearance. To start, I am taller than most people my age, and it causes people to view me as powerful, athletic and intimidating. Also my thin frame evokes prejudice and leads others to underestimate my abilities; they assume that I am weak. Lastly, people have different first impressions of me based on my tattoo and the way I dress. These physical traits provoke both positive and negative criticism. Ultimately, people do not judge me based on my behaviour and personality, but rather based on the way I present my body and my physical appearance.…

Looks don't matter; its inner beauty that really counts. We grew up hearing these phrases. Our parents and teachers taught us not to judge people based on their looks. If all these things are true, then why do most of us judge people solely on their outer appearance? Why does the media put so much pressure on us to look a certain way, or fit into a specific size? Why do we still see headlines like “How to Lose Weight and Get Him to Like You”? Why does the media use severe airbrushing techniques to hide any flaws and impurities a person has? Magazines and media sites should not be allowed to drastically alter and manipulate people’s images and portray those images as the perfect goal one should strive to achieve. Being bombarded with unrealistic body images could have devastating effects on people, especially on women. Women need to start feeling happy and comfortable in their…

There is no reason for us to judge people based on their looks, they didn’t get to choose to whom they were born. Yet so many times I find myself doing this, everyone does, even if they don’t admit it. Prejudice can have a wide range of implications on the person to whom it is directed at. I believe that lots of times we don’t see these effects immediately, but they show up later on in the person’s life.…
