UC Irvine Health Case Study Essay
Length of stay was not the only process that was made more effective with the implementation of the PSH model at UC Irvine Health. Another aspect that was positively affected by the PSH model was turnover time of a procedure. According to UC Irvine Health ninety two percent of procedures start at 7:30 in the morning. With the implementation of the PSH model the turnover time averaged about 29 minutes. This was a 31 percent improvement from before the PSH model was implemented. For those worried about the performance of a surgeon because the turnover time improved, it went unaffected. According to UC Irvine Health, the 166 cases researched that all 166 cases had 100.00 performance rates. Because the performance of the surgeons was so high in less amount of time, this lowered the readmission rate for the same health issue. UC Irvine found that the readmission rate for hip arthroplasties is zero percent. The national average for readmission for a knee arthroplasty is between 2.5 percent and 4.3 percent compared to UC Irvine Health readmission rate which is 1.1 percent
Reducing health care costs was another main goal of the PSH model when it was created.

The first major problem that could arise and did arise at the UC Irvine Health is getting physicians and surgeons on board. When the PSH model was first introduced in 2011 to the surgeons and physicians at UC Irvine Health there was a lot of skepticism and resistance. Experienced surgeons and physicians had seen multiple models come and go that did not change the perioperative process, so why would the PSH model be any different. The way to combat this obstacle is to make someone that is a “perioperativist” the leader. UC Irvine Health chose to go this route as well to combat any doubtfulness of the PSH model.     Mr. G’s organization was planning a major international congress abroad, but the communication through e-mails and other efforts with the local organizers was almost impossible or late. Several agenda and lists have been passed over. Mr. G felt depressed about the situation assigning the companies finances to this project without having enough information. After weeks Mr. G became aware what the counterpart has planned for the agenda and he was surprised and concerned about the detailed and long business meals and cultural trips without any information or expenditures, knowing that the companies budget is limited.
