U1L1 Ws
1. Sketch a ball and stick diagram of a water molecule. Label the atoms and indicate the partial charges that exist in a water molecule. (2) 2. Which type of bonds are found between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the water molecule? (1)
Covalent bonds
3. What is the name given to the attractive forces that exist between water molecules that are close to each other and causes them to stick together? (1)
Hydrogen bonding
4. Use a diagram with 5 water molecules to illustrate hydrogen bonding between water molecules (start with one molecule in the middle). How many water molecules can hydrogen bond with a single water molecule? (3)
Each water molecule can form hydrogen bonds with up to 4 neighbors

5. List a few everyday observations that provide evidence of water molecules sticking together because of hydrogen bonding. (3)
A)Boats float on water due to the surface tension by hydrogen bonding.
B)High boiling point of water.C) Capillary action or the formation of meniscus when the water interacts with glass.
1 Water is a ___polar____ molecule. Water _dissolves____ many substances (especially other __polar_____ molecules). This property makes water an excellent ___solvent________. (2)

2 Use examples to explain the role of water in living things using the topics given below. (9)

a) Water as a Solvent
Blood contains water. When we ingest and digest food, the nutrients are absorbed into the blood circulatory system through the villi in our small intestine. These nutrients are then transported all over the body for the cell metabolism. Hence, water plays the role of dissolving nutrients into the blood.
b) Water as a Temperature Regulator
Water has high specific heat of capacity, which means they can carry a lot of heat. Example, we sweat during a hot day, because our body temperature is increasing. Water is squeezed out from the sweat pores as sweat to lower down our body temperature.
c) Water as a Lubricant and Transportation

The human body consists mostly of water, and is a major constituent to the human body and vital organs; of this 90% include blood plasma, lymph, urine, saliva, digestive juices, bile, cerebrospinal fluid and tissue fluid. Water enables substances to be transported throughout the body, red blood cells for example, as wells as supplying the medium required for metabolic reaction to take place (respiration). Without water the progression of these fluids would not be possible. Water is constantly being transported between the fluid compartments of the body.…

Hydrogen bonding is not a type of intramolecular force. Eg. Ionic, metallic and covalent bonding, it is an intermolecular force. An intramolecular force is one that exists between the atoms in a molecule. With water, it is the covalent bond present between the oxygen and two hydrogen atoms being intramolecular and the force that exists between neighboring molecules being intermolecular. Eg. Dispersion forces, dipole-dipole bonds. It is also known that intramolecular forces are much stronger than intermolecular forces. With relation to strength, the covalent bond in water is approximately 25 times the strength of the intermolecular hydrogen bond caused by di-pole attraction.…
