Type Foundry Research
Due date for topic:

Week 4, Th, Feb 12

Due date for presentation:

Week 8, Th, March 12

Investigate a type foundry that you think produces well-designed typography. Do your research online and/or in the library. From the information you collect, you will give a short talk in class—this will include background info and examples of the typeface(s).
The purpose of the assignment is to familiarize yourself with the business of typographic design and its manufacture, and to provide you with the experience of researching a design topic.
Note: Very often, foundries will send free catalogs and posters— order everything!

Presentation

The purpose of the presentation is to share information with your peers and to provide you with the experience of speaking in front of a group of people.
Your presentation, including Q&A, should not last more than four minutes. Practice your delivery beforehand to get the timing right.
You may use a presentation software application (PowerPoint,
Keynote), but be sure to test run the file in the Mac Lab before the presentation day. Also, refer to the common pitfall known as
“Death by PowerPoint” before creating your slide deck.

Important Points

When did the foundry start? Who runs the business? Where is it located? What kind of typefaces do they sell? How much are they? Do they offer a student discount or free fonts? Is there a web site? What is the URL?

m

Do not research a type designer or a single typeface.
The assignment is 8 weeks long in order for you to have time to get to know your topic, NOT to put it off until the last minute.
No projects will be accepted that have not passed topic approval.
No topic changes can occur after approval.
IF you have questions about this project, you must contact me by email and/or see me during my office hours. DO NOT interrupt class with such inquiries.

The theme of the story “A&P” is “always weigh your consequences before taking actions”. The formal aspects used by the author to develop the story were symbolism, point of view, and setting. A&P written by John Updike first published in 1961 is about, the narrator, Sammy who is checking groceries when he realizes that three barefoot girls in bathing suits have walked into the store. The leader of the three, who has her bathing suit straps down, catches his eye. Firoozeh Dumas' essay, "The F-Word," addresses the very relatable struggle every person with an ethnic name faces in the American culture. Her prime example being herself, Dumas humorously and realistically depicts the trauma a person endures from constantly having to educate people about your name. She also uses the names of her siblings to provide a comparison of the names' meaning in Persian versus their American mispronunciations. Dumas' seamless use of analogies, word choice and quotations assists in her goal of making the reader understand and sympathize with her frustration.…

The story of a father with two sons is told in the Gospel of Luke through the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The Parable teaches about loss as one son dismissively leaves his family, ultimately denying his own heritage and background, to lead a "wastefully extravagant" life. Eventually, he returns to the family he left behind. On the surface, Alice Walker's characters in Everyday Use appear quite similar. A mother has two daughters with very different personalities and values. One daughter "leaves", sees the world outside and returns to the place and people she left. Here is where the stories diverge, however. In the Parable, the returning son repents for his past actions and mistreatment of others. In Everyday Use, Dee returns to Mama…

What is death penalty? Death penalty is when a state or the government issues the punishment of execution to some one who has committed a crime. It has always been one of the most highly debated issues in the United States. Many Americans are against the capital punishment or commonly knows as the death penalty because they fear its too expensive or there are religious reasons to oppose the death penalty or some other reasons. But my point of view is just like the bible and what it says "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" meaning if you killed some body you ought to be killed also. Most people aren't worried about the life after committing crimes because they know that the laws aren't strict enough to make them to stop committing crimes. To these people, laws don't hold them back from doing what they want to do. Capital punishment is mainly used for murderers and other serious criminals dangerous to our society. People who oppose the capital punishment clearly don't feel the pain and the trouble the victims and their families has gone through. So, is capital punishment necessary? Yes, capital punishment deters crime and gives closure to families of the victim.…

I was especially concerned with citations. However, I found myself being able to work though citations with little effort.…
