How does culture make us who we are? Culture constantly instructs the way one views others in the world. People have many different ways of thinking and doing things, therefore everyone will not see eye to eye when it comes to explaining how culture constantly instructs the way one views others in the world.
Family life and culture influences the way we see things. Like in “Two Ways to Belong in America” Mira is influenced by her family’s Indian culture. Even though she lives in the U.S. she choses to stay an Indian citizen and stay with the culture she grew up with. Even when her sister went from their Indian culture to American culture, she kept the same views she had when she came to the United States of America. You can tell this by when she tells Bharati over the phone “For over 30 years, I’ve invested my creativity and professional skills into the improvement of this country’s pre-school system. I’ve obeyed all the rules, I’ve paid my taxes, I love my work, I love my students, I love the friends I’ve made. How dare America now change its rules in midstream? For example in the story “Everyday Use” Dee wants to change from her african american culture, because she felts ashamed. On the other hand in the story “Two Ways to Belong in America” Bharati had changed from her native culture while mira kept her native culture. Both of these stories demonstrates how culture can instructs the way one views others and the world even if both sisters grew up knowing one culture.
