American football is among one of the most popular sports in the western culture. It is considered “‘normal’, healthy, and expected,” like with other sports (Cherney & Lindermann, 2014, p. 2). The television show Friday Night Lights uses the platform of football to show the “mythology of a rural U.S. heartland,” in a place known, “…for aggressive sport culture…” (Johnson, 2010, p. 61). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the episode, “Last Days of Summer,” from Friday Night Lights using the text from Kellner and Fiske. I assert from a critical cultural studies perspective that “Last Days of Summer,” normalizes gender roles through separation of parenthood into: motherhood and fatherhood, and how their interaction with their daughter furthers the ideological family dynamic.…
An Australian male; outgoing, masculine, hard working and courageous who can concur anything with a cold one in his left hand, a snag in the other and a hot shiela by his side. This seems exactly the life Australian blokes are living, so were told or rather yet shown. This perception of a dominate brute male, with his submissive shiela by his side is the typical representation displayed within mainstream Australian films. Although this view on gender roles outside of the big screen is not the case. Australian women are stepping out into the world in 6 inch heels ready to destroy the marriage obsessed, uneducated and husband orientated image illustrated in these such films. House wives are taking on a new status removing barriers and breaking…
The character Viola played by Imogen Stubbs in “Twelfth Night: Or What You Will” is similar and different to “She’s The Man’s” Amanda Bynes. Both of these females played as men during the movie. Each actor had her strengths and weaknesses throughout their movies.…
As the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini came to an end, the emotional turmoil never lessened. As both Mariam and Laila’s stories progressed, so did the tragic war in Afghanistan. The consistent combat changed both their lives in dramatic ways. I chose this novel due to my cousin being deployed to Afghanistan, and I am interested in the culture and daily life of those who live in Afghanistan.…
One similarity between the play Twelfth Night and She’s The Man would be the characters personalities. Viola in Twelfth Night is rough, very adventurous and outgoing, so is viola in She’s The Man. Both Violas actually have the guts to dress up as a man and do all these things women can’t do, se a different perspective.…
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy by William Shakespeare that takes place in Athens, Greece and in the forest where chaos unfolds on four lovers: Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius. In these relationships the men are in power, belittling the women. Also, in the forest chaos happens between the fairies, King Oberon and Queen Titania, because he puts a potion on her and other in which the men are in control of the society they are in. An example of patriarchy is in the relationships between Theseus and Hippolyta, Lysander and Hermia, and Demetrius and Helena when the men take control. Throughout the play the men have power over the women, as…
There are many reasons why boys would play the female roles throughout the 1800s during Shakespeare's influence over the theatre. Young boys would often play the parts of women in Shakespeare plays and an entrance into an acting career. Often there would be only around 4 actors performing in one production at a time therefore multi rolling was common and each actor had to be versatile. Audience members gave positive impressions of the quality of the acting of boy players.…
Gender roles have caused strain over decades to not only females, but recently males as well. There are many attributes that humans have associated with each gender, causing a divide between sexes not only with each other, but also separating the two into almost completely different species. Due to this categorizing which is placed on gender, there can be a declining value of a person or even a higher hand given to the one gender which is seen as more powerful to society.…
In Romeo and Juliet on the first two acts of the play I believe that the male gender made a more dramatic impact than the female gender. Because woman of Verona are appraised to be a completely different class in comparison to men. Women are thought of as inferior, weaker, and they are seen more as objects to possess. They are suppose to dream of getting married and having kids. On the other hand the men of Verona are always having wars and getting into fights. Because of his fiery, hot-headed personality Tybalt is the main person who causes a majority of the fights. For example in act one scene one Benvolio pulls out his sword to stop the fight between Sampson,Gregory, and Abram.Tybalt comes and says “What are thou drawn among these heartless…
In conclusion, if I had to do the IOP over again, I would change a couple of concepts. To start off, I would choose a realistic thesis and make sure that there would be plenty of examples of it in the subject I decide to investigate to back up my argument. In my case, I would most likely choose a lot more stories to explore so I support my thesis well. I would have also stated why my thesis about gender roles is relevant to Romeo and Juliet which I did not do so well on. Therefore, advice I would give to others preparing for their first IOP is to take into consideration the depth of their content and ensure that it is well thought out or at least original. It is nice to hear the opinions of other classmates, ergo being straightforward is beneficial.…
Today’s television shows have made an effort to stray from the classic American family and the gender roles within it. While gender roles aren’t as evident as they use to be, that’s not to say they do not exist. The Brady Bunch is a perfect example of gender roles existing even in a non-traditional family in the 1970’s. In a more current show, Full House, we also see a non-traditional family without a mother, but after looking closer I found that gender roles are still there.…
Gender roles are affected by the typical roles society expects both men and women to fit into because they determine how we should think, speak, dress, and interact within the context of society. Whereas I believe that men and women should be who they want to be.…
Throughout Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, there is an overlaying presence of the typical roles that men and women were supposed to play. During Elizabethan times there was a major difference between the way men and women were supposed to act. Men typically were supposed to be masculine and powerful, and defend the honor. Women, on the other hand, were supposed to be subservient to their men in their lives and do as ever they wished. In Romeo and Juliet the typical gender roles that men and women were supposed to play had an influence on the fate of their lives.…
CHARACTER SKETCH ESSAY: One of the most significant characters in William Shakespeare Twelfth Night is Viola, a girl who disguises as a young boy in order to be employed by the duke of Illyria Orsino. Throughout the play Viola goes through different obstacles and struggles but ends up on finding the correct path toward her happiness. Which then makes Viola is a good woman because she is obedient, selfless and brave. To begin, Viola is a good woman because she is obedient.…
Gender is one of the most obvious and much-discussed topics in the play. Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s so-called…
