My goals in joining peer tutoring were to have an easy term project assignment and spending one hour each week for studying with my friends in an enjoyable atmosphere, but after a couple of sessions, I discovered that peer tutoring was more than that. With peer tutoring, my motivation for studying has increased a significant amount as well as my grades. The program didn’t only provide me academic success, but it also thought me the best studying skills that I will use for a lifetime. Throughout the program, I experienced both being a tutor and a tutee. Both of them have benefited me in different ways. The day I started my first session, I was not aware of the fact that choosing peer tutoring was one of the best decisions I have made in my academic life.…

I am interested in the position of ACE Tutor at Loyola University Chicago. As an ACE scholar, I have been taking advantage of this resource for the past few years. I would credit my academic success to all the tutors I have previously had from high school to college. Being a first generation student made my experience with upper level courses more difficult than others. I often did not know how to tackle certain subjects because I was the first in my family to take them. When I began taking advantage of tutoring services, in tutors I found mentors. I realized early that I enjoy tutoring and mentoring students, specifically those who have limited sources like I did. For the past three years, I have been tutoring at a non-profit organization,…

There are several models of reflection which can be used but I decide to choose Gibb’s model (1988), because it is clearer and a common model used by the health professions. However, in this assignment I had to give three teaching sessions. In these sessions my development as a teacher in an academic context was analyzed. I am now critically evaluating the processes and application of the learning that I have experienced, drawing on relevant theories of education/teaching and learning. Moreover, it will also assist me to demonstrate what I have learned and how my new knowledge, skills and attitude will impact on me as a teacher in an academic context.…

Students have their own unique set of challenges in their education, which they needed to overcome to become a good learner. However, learning in an intercultural environment such as Divine Word College is challenging because of the diversity as “each student is a unique person” (Michelle Forman). Students may find it difficult to adapt to the type of environment DWC has because of its strong ties to religious formation. Hence, having professional learners to guide students is important as they continue their education as it helps student’s to develop their “capacity for learning” (Michelle Forman). For this reason, DWC has provided their students with a tutorial lab. This lab is intended to help students on writing, help develop language…

Tom Gier’s article “Ingredients for a Good Tutor Session” discloses important communication problems between a tutor and a student. Building properly relationships with the student is one of the main task for the tutor. Giving undivided attention, having empathy, being honest, make the student feel good about him/herself are the necessary tutor’s skills for a successful session; and these are not a full list. Another important task is to recognize the student’s strengths and weaknesses; and use the strengths as assistant while tutoring. Likewise, a good tutor should create a positive friendly sentiment and attitude to the learning process. For that the tutor should give a credit to what the student knows and then help with new knowledge. As…

I went into KIPP thinking that it was going to easy to help tutor because I love the material that they cover around those grades. My misconception was that tutoring was going to be easy. Do not get me wrong, it is easier now than it was in the beginning, because I found myself trying to make it more difficult than it need to be. On my first day a boy asked for help, I read the problem and started to explain to him what he needed to do. He looked at me as if I was speaking a different language. Then he told me that it was not the way his teacher was teaching him earlier that day. This situation reminded me that there’s multiple ways of doing a problem. Since then I no longer tell them what I thought how the problem should be solved, but for…

    Peer Tutoring

I have learned a lot from peer tutoring. it has broadened my horizone on what being a role model really means. not only did i get to work with some amazing grade nines but i also learned a lot from them. coming into peer tutoring i didnt know what to expect, but i soon learned that its a great class! i made relationships with most of the students which made me be more of assistance, when they needed help. for example, i was able to get to know Erica better, since i sat next to her i began to know her a lot better which was easier for me to help her when she needed some help with tasks. Erica is a great girl! always filled with positivity and excitment, i had a lot of fun and learned a lot from working with her. eventhough, sometimes it is hard for her to concentrate and stay on tasks when working on assignments she ussually takes instruction well. it is a good that Erica likes to express her opinions on topics and descusions while we are in groups. sometimes her opinions lead to topics that are not realivent to the assignment given to accomplish, and sometimes she needs constant reminders to stay foccussed and get back on tasks. her cheerfull attitude makes it easy to work with her and explain things that she doesnt understand. when she works with Reign it is very hard to get them both to focuss on their own work and i usually have to seperate them so they can get their work done. reign is also another student that i have gotten to know quit well. she is a hard worker with determination and will power, she comes prepared mostly everyday and tries her hardest. what can be a problem sometimes is that she doesnt always have her assignments done and ready to hand in, she has been lacking in this area for a good portion of the semester. when i work with reign, it is sometimes hard for her to pay attension and understand what the assignment is. Reign also struggles in taking charge and getting her work done because she gets distracted by other students in the classroom.…
