Turn Off The Phone Analysis
September 12, 2012
Article of the Week

The article ''Turn Off the Phone (and the Tension)'' is an immensely good article for a close reading. First it has many details on why the author made the many points that she did. In addition, the use of other sources or people greatly improves her argument. Jenna Wortham talks about how “smart phones and social networks have become lifelines”(Wortham), and the fact of the matter is that it is true. People all over the world use social websites like Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. A large part of humanity rely on these sites so much that whatever they do has to be posted. Any place that they are at, always has to be posted and that point is proven with the first paragraph of the article. Not only does

Joshua Gross is the best asset to relate too. He puts it plain and simple, “we are over communicated”(Gross), and it simply relates to us that you do not need a hundred connections telling you what is going on in the world. Your phone is enough but you do not have to be attached to it. Even when I go to a rink to play hockey, I see parents who are surfing the web, or even texting instead of watching there kids play!! Are you kidding me?! Almost our whole community and civilization has gotten sucked into smart phones and social media sites and other connected devices, but the truth is that they are useful to a point. There is no need to stay on Facebook or Twitter for hours and hours, or to stare at your phone waiting for someones status to change or waiting for a text. Some things are necessary, like for instance communicating with someone, or knowing what is going on. I can even admit that some smart phones are useful than just phones. They can act as translators or drawing boards, or even workout schedules and that’s fine, but spending your life on your phone is just useless. Do you think Facebook or Twitter will close down? Most likely not, and more websites will be created,

In today’s society we are dependent on social media for information. Social media gives us a feeling of being connected, even when we don’t even know the person we are reading about. The information passed through Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, MySpace comes to us uncensored and can evolve rather quickly. Many companies use tools like Facebook, to reach their customers. People are on Facebook twenty four hours of the day, seven days of the week no matter what is going on. One of the reason that websites like Facebook have become such in inter part of our lives is our cell phones give us the ability to connect with people, places and things…

Once upon a time, people had real-life conversations and real relationships. These days we either talk by texting, e-mails, or social media and we are even using the internet to find lovers. People are forgetting how to talk and have sincere relationships because technology is shaping how we falsely feel about others and ourselves. After reading Sherry Turkle’s book, Alone Together, I have become more aware of people and myself always being connected. Honestly, it frightens me. How would people behave without their cell phones or social media? Literally insane. People do not know how to function around other people unless they are connected to something. Why are we letting ourselves and our relationships be controlled by social media and our phones? People need to connect more with other people rather than being glued to the screens of their cell phones. Texting and social media are crumbling relationships, intimate and friendly, every day, yet it is letting us find love. We need to detox ourselves from technology to be able to have legitimate, caring relationships before it is too late and we cannot escape technology’s control. Although some use the Internet and social media to find love, look at what it can stir up and destroy, technology is not the answer for love.…

The article, “Turn Off the Phone (and the Tension)” by Jenna Wortham, from the New York Times, can be related to most people in our generation. Our generation is filled with new technology and doing things faster and more efficient. I would say the majority of teenagers have smart phones with texting and/or internet. I feel that most people have forgotten to live in the moment and just to enjoy what is around them. I personally know many people who are constantly on social networking sites and updating pictures of their everyday life. For some reason, we care so much about other people's lives and what they are doing every second of the day. But I believe that we need to ask ourselves, "Is this even relevant to me?", "Does this help my life in any way?" I can completely relate to what this article is saying because I have also had these thoughts in my head.…

We live in a very interesting time. We are a people steadily becoming more and more reliant on our electronics. Everywhere you look you can find people glued to their smart phones; at stoplights, walking down the street, during meetings, at the dinner table, while shopping, even when hanging out in a group. Sadly, when connecting with others through our devices we are actually disconnected from reality. Our society is changing at an exceedingly rapid rate due to advancements in technology.…

The article I chose to review was about different shapes and features technology such as cell phones in the U.S. can have its issues within society. This article however highlighted different mobile devices and their benefits, market analysts describe the social networking market as too young and is expected to continue over the next few years. Through many generations, technology has innovated and advanced itself to meet the demands of the consumer, however with every advance come with a setback, in my mind any way. Consumers desire products that will enhance their social networking and communication. One of the most powerful products to keep consumers socially connected is technology such as cell phones. Cell Phones are not only a portable media players; they have numerous applications from all forms of entertainment to social networking. As advances follow technology, individuals are able to download music, videos, and movies, however there are all kinds of legal ethical issues that are involved such as copyright infringements. In addition, since they are mobile devices, users can connect to the Internet through any unsecured wireless network, even if it means they are stealing the service. Additionally, there are various social issues drawn in since cell phones act as a form of communication. With users constantly updating their statuses and the convenience of the tracking tool, it creates severe problems for stalking and cyber security. Another thing is that Apple is offers subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, and etc. that can be read on the other forms of technology such as IPads as well. The problem is that one has to pay for and download an application from the Apple store in order to read them, even though one has already paid for a subscription to the magazine. The iPod Touch has doubtlessly strengthened sociability between people, but it also shaped problems for cyber stalking and personal safety. So, as you can…

In today's culture, there is no escape from technology. We are completely engulfed in our cell phones, I phones, computers, and gaming systems. These devices give us the opportunity to be connected to each other and the rest of the world at all times. But, this is a good and bad step in history. Technology blinds us from the real world, and makes it possible for people to gain control over everything, except technology. This is the world we live in, people are so addicted to technological devices they have forgotten what it is to be social. Social by definition is to live in companionship with others or in a community, rather than in isolation (Dictionary.com). The arrival of social networking is ironically the beginning of our social downfall. When do you pull the plug and realize that too much of anything, no matter how good it is, is a bad thing.…

Everyone now a days have so many ways of keeping in touch with their friends and family throughout every second of the day. Facebook and Twitter are now available to access through many smart phones and new portable electronics, so more and more people tweet or facebook someone while they are driving or even when they are at work instead of traditionally going on a computer in their home office. I personally agree with this article because, today’s society cannot go one day without going on their twitter or facebook that it has become more of an addiction than just a fun way to communicate with others. I will shamefully admit I am one of those people who go on facebook during class and cannot stop texting my friends throughout the day on my blackberry. A quote from this article that really stood out to me was something that our president Barack Obama said,“Information should be a source not of distraction, but of enlightenment.” I think a lot of people should relate to that quote because not all of the social media is bad, you can actually learn a lot from it if you use it the right way. There are a lot of software programs you can use to help build the education of child without worrying about your kid being on the computer for large amounts of time. And there is a thing called parental control where parents can block what they don’t want their children to see or do on the computer or even on a tv. There will be a day when Facebook and Twitter are no longer are as popular as they are, and everyone will just laugh about how much time they wasted revolving their world around them, missing out on the new things the world has to…

Recently the ones that are managing the technology are the youngest people; they think that they are completely cool because they have the latest device that came out in the market. They think that in the society they have to be the coolest one and they use the technology to reach that objective. When people go out with their friends, they do not share with their friends or partners “My most recent one doesn 't involve guilt trips, family squabbles or eccentric relatives. It 's about getting stuck at the far end of a restaurant dinner table with an extended family member who spent the entire meal on her smart phone” (CNN, 2013), they are only stick to their mobiles and they are constantly answering messages and checking their social networks in order to be the most famous on the social networks, they do not even talk with their friends, in the reality they are hanging out with their mobiles instead of their friends. “People say that they feel naked without their phones” (Krisner, 2013).…

    Use of Social Media

Many people believe that social media, as well as technology itself, has had many negative effects on society. For example, when someone needs to turn in a paper within in a week they sit down for 3 hours while only one of those hours were actually writing the essay. This happens on a daily basis, because in today’s society we rely on the technology we have that it is practically attached to us. We all know that dreaded feeling of having to do our homework, so we put it off as late as we can and then eventually get to it an hour before it is due. But while we put it off, we were sitting texting, tweeting, facebooking, on instagram, on youtube, watching the VMAs, or even reading the tabloids about which boy from One Direction is dating which celebrity. We have become so wrapped up with this technology that we forget about all the important things in life like doing our homework, talking to an actual person, or maybe even picking someone up from the airport, that we soon forget about the important things in life. In fact most of us have done almost all of these things at one point or another. Doing all of these things can only break us, not help us. By just texting someone instead of calling or speaking to them face to face we are losing that sense of connection to the outside world. We begin to lack in our communication skills that were drilled into us when we were children, and that is why today’s generation of kids are lacking them. Remember when you learned how to write in cursive in elementary school? A…

    Modern Tecnology

Modern technology takes people away from the community, and takes time they spend engaging with other people away. “We are tethered to our “always-on/always-on-us” communication devices and the people we reach through them: people, web pages, voice-mail, games, artificial intelligences (non-player game characters, interactive online “bots”)” (Turkle 133). Some people may say that modern technology helps us stay “connected” with the world, and it is an easier way to get things done, but that is not true. For example, it is my friend’s birthday, so I will text him “happy birthday” via my cellphone. I do not go to his house and bring him a gift or cake, but rather use my machine. The norms and traditions we once hard are slowly fading away and essentially are becoming extinct. Modern technology is limiting human interactions, and distancing people from the community as a whole. People become intimate with these machines and ultimately compel them to speak a new state of mind (Turkle 23). Society no longer conforms to the norms of public and private space. “The…

Recently, I read a Reader's Digest article that showed the lack of communication between people because of smartphones, thus bringing about a lack of close relationships. The author of this article, Terry Stone, stressed the fact that "more people have become less attentive to the people closest to them because of this product". Our lives require an establishment of healthy relationships, but this cannot be accomplished with these newfangled products. Therefore, the quality of our lives are dropping significantly.…

No secret to anyone that the period in which we live is a period of cell phones, internet and social networking. Examples of this are forums, Facebook, Twitter, BlackBerry Messenger, the “Whatsapp,” lnstagram, and many more sites and programs of social communication. Now the majority of people around the world have Smart Phones and it does not matter if it is an iPhone or an Android, it matters how they use it. Because cell phones have positive and negative effects, that may change people’s lives. It is important to manage use in a positive way.…
