In the first quarter of the book Charlotte can not or will not trust anyone. When she was getting on the seahawk she thought that she was not going to be the only girl on the ship but then the other people could not make it. So she was the only girl on the ship and even worse she was younger than everyone else. Then meet Captain Jaggery Zachariah and they both wanted her to keep the dirk so she knew that people would be dangerous.
