QUICK FACTS Key Facts – Tropicana Headquarters: Chicago, Ill. – Tropicana is the leading producer and marketer of branded fruit juices. – Tropicana is the largest single buyer of Florida oranges. – More than 400 Florida groves are monitored through a proprietary system that ensures the fruit is harvested at peak of goodness and flavor. – Once the fruit is picked, it is quickly delivered to one of Tropicana’s juice‐making plants. The fresh oranges are hand‐graded and any fruit that does not meet our stringent standards is removed. – Tropicana holds sponsorship rights to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, the home to the Major League Baseball team Tampa Bay Rays. History – Anthony Rossi founded what came to be Tropicana in 1947 in Bradenton, Fla. – The company started as a small company selling fruit gift boxes in Florida and shortly thereafter shipping them to stores in New York City. By 1957, a ship, S.S. Tropicana was taking 1.5 million gallons of juice from Florida to New York each week. – Tropicana was the first to own and operate refrigerated trucks in the 1950s, which allowed for shipment of juice around the country. – A breakthrough innovation occurred in 1954, when Rossi invented and patented a flash pasteurization process which allowed juice to be shipped and stored without refrigeration. Sold in a ready‐to‐serve package, Tropicana Pure Premium became the company’s flagship product. – In 1969, Tropicana became a publicly‐traded company and, in 1978, was sold to Beatrice Foods. – Tropicana was acquired by PepsiCo in 1998, also bringing Dole juice brands into PepsiCo’s beverage portfolio. Health & Wellness – One 8 ounce glass of Tropicana Pure Premium is made from fresh fruit and is a good source of four essential nutrients, including a day’s supply of vitamin C, as much potassium as a medium banana and B vitamins (folate and thiamin). – Launched in 2009, Trop50 offers 50 percent less sugar and calories

Per capita beer consumption in the country had been stable for many years. In order to find new opportunities for growth, Cerjugo management decided to expand their product lines into juices. They recognized early on that the juice business was very different from that of beer. In beer, there was little competition and profit margins were high, close to 40 percent. The profit margins for juice would be much lower and there were a number of competitors but they felt they could create a competitive advantage by (1) focusing on “freshness,” i.e., all natural ingredients; (2) by leveraging their deep knowledge of their consumers; and (3) by capitalizing on an already strong retail customer base, which would triple as a result of adding juice products.…

Robert Cade, Dick Malonis, Harry James Free, and Dana Shires were the medical researchers at the University of Florida who created Gatorade in 1965. The Gators football coach, Ray Graves, was frustrated with the performance of his players during the hot summer football practices, and asked the team doctor, one of Cade’s associates, for his insight. Cade and his research team came across the unique mix of water, sodium, sugar, potassium, phosphate, and lemon juice that is now known as Gatorade in honor of the football team, the Gators. The football team credited Gatorade with their first Orange Bowl win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 1967, and the drink became an instant phenomenon. The Yellow Jackets coach Bud Carson, when asked why they lost, replied: "We didn’t have Gatorade. That made the difference. Shortly after, Cade partnered with Stokely-Van Camp, Inc. (S-VC) to produce and distribute the product. A year after its commercial introduction Gatorade was reformulated, as its initial recipe contained the sweetener cyclamate, which was banned by the FDA. The Quaker Oats Company bought S-VC in 1983, after a bidding war with rival Pillsbury. Quaker licensed manufacturing of Gatorade in some worldwide markets to PepsiCo, but sued Pepsi in Australia in 1998, alleging Pepsi had misappropriated Gatorade trade secrets to manufacture its own sports drink, All Sport. Quaker won the Australian case.[2] In the meantime, the University of Florida has received royalties for Gatorade each year, since their settlement with Cade in 1973.[3]…

With an annual consumption of more than 300 million litres (Source: Tetrapak India Study), fruit juice is not an alien concept for the Indian market. However, a very large part of the Indian consumer today feels alienated when fruit juice is packaged. Perhaps, that is why packaged juice accounts for only between 15% and 20% of the total juice consumption in India. Compared to the West, packaged fruit juice penetration, at just 4%, is still very low (Source: NRS 2005). Symbolised by the orange fruit, packaged juices and nectars are driven by fresh juice made at home and popularised by the street-side juice vendor. Dabur Foods Limited (DFL) has always taken an uncompromising stand on these consumer barriers and has consistently been thinking out of the box for the last nine years, with a resolve to innovate and evolve new products.…
