Tris Vs Odysseus
Tris V.S Odysseus. Who Will Win? Imagine a world without heroes, no one to guide the helpless citizens that roam about from the terrible evils that poison the world. A hero is someone who is idolized for their actions or qualities, someone who acquires the qualities of strong leader, who will guide society away from the evils of the world. Two great heroes are Odysseus, a made up character, from Homer’s The Odyssey, and Tris, the main character, from Veronica Roth’s series Divergent. While Odysseus may have been an original hero, Tris has blossomed like a flower to become a much better hero than Odysseus. One would be right to think that Odysseus is hero because he is brave, strong, and smart, however he uses all his hero qualities for himself. To begin, Odysseus is a hero because he is brave. Tris is a great hero because she is brave In the movie, Tris ziplines down from the 100th story of a building (Divergent). This shows that Tris is a greater hero than Odysseus because she was brave, but not for her own good, but just to pursue a tradition. Tris is a magnanimous hero because she is selfless. In the book Allegiant, Tris, instead of her brother, volunteers to go on a suicide mission and sacrifices herself instead (Roth). This shows that Tris is selfless because she actually gives her life for someone else, whereas Odysseus would have given others’ lives to save himself. Tris is the best hero because she is very shrewd. In the movie, Tris decides that, for a game of capture the flag, she needs to get a higher view to look for the other team’s flag. She finds it and wins the game for her team. (Divergent). This shows that Tris is a hero because she is smart and had very good strategies that are not as obvious as Odysseus’ strategies and plans, yet they are less daring and more

Everyone has different personality traits. Odysseus has both hero qualities and not so heroic qualities. This epic poem is called “The Odyssey”. It was written by Homer, an ancient Greek poet. Epic hero qualities are traits the hero character of a story has. They include strength, loyalty, intelligence, and courage. One would think Odysseus has many epic hero traits, but he also has many traits that are not heroic. There are many examples of his heroic qualities. Something that shows loyalty is when he says, “So we moved out, sad in the vast offing, having our precious lives, but not our friends.” This shows that Odysseus is loyal because talking about not having his friends anymore and being with his men. He also has strength. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under the rowing benches…” shows this because it takes strength to tie three men down to a ship. When he shows courage, he says “We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship: as for myself I took my twelve best men and went ahead.” in which one would notice Odysseus had the courage to go see who the enormous man was when he reached Cyclops Island and told his men to watch the ship for him.…

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

When one thinks of a hero, one thinks of a good hearted person. Someone who saves lives and is righteous. An epic hero like Odysseus is not the two dimensional character found in Grimm’s Fairy Tales. He exhibits both traits of a hero and a villain. While clever and determined, Odysseus is unfaithful and selfish. Although revered in the past, Odysseus is not so glorious today.…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

Superheroes have become increasingly popular in recent times and most people have their favorite from Superman to Batman to the Avengers. Not all heroes have to be superheroes with superpowers. Many people can identify heroes in their everyday life as well. Heroes can be someone that helps a person, for example many people consider their parents to be heroes because of the support they provide them in life. The difference between a superhero and a hero is that heroes are normal people just trying to be there for others while superheroes are made up characters in a book or movie with extraordinary powers. Mistakes are part of everyone’s life, but the difference between a normal person and a hero is that when a hero makes a mistake they work to fix it or overcome the problem. In the book the Odyssey, there are many problems and obstacles that Odysseus has to overcome in his attempt to get home. Odysseus is not a modern day hero because he tricked his men into thinking that he has logos. He convinced his men to be as brave as he is when they were going to fight through scylla. He does this because he knew he whould not get eaten while his men whould. as shown in this quote he gives his men ethos to get them ready “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, saying gently, have we ever been in danger before this.” after he told them this they went to scylla and fought. Stories and characters from Mythology have had a huge influence on our culture, especially the heroes. We admire the courage, kindness, and smarts these heroes portray in their lives; how they put others before themselves and fight to the very end. These are all the characteristics that best represent a hero. In her collection of stories entitled Mythology, Edith Hamilton tells the story of three of the most famous heroes from mythology: Hercules, Perseus, and Theseus. All of these heroes have many of the qualities that make up a good hero. However, Theseus is the quintessential hero because, unlike the others, he makes wise decisions, treats others fairly, and is extremely courageous.…

Tris began the novel timid and unsure of herself and her desires, which was characteristic of her Abnegation upbringing: she was never allowed to focus on herself, so she never knew exactly what she wanted. Upon choosing Dauntless her bravery obviously begins to blossom, but she experiences some other changes as well. She forges friendships and relationships central to her identity, with people who bring out the best in her. And she learns that though she has chosen another faction, she can still be selfless; and indeed she is, time and time again. By the end of the novel, she is fully aware of herself as Divergent - someone who does not fit in, but who cannot be controlled. The events of the end of the novel reinforce who she has been - selfless - and who she wants to become - brave. There are many significant experiences to discuss, both good and bad, that shaped Tris as a person throughout her time in Dauntless.…
