Triple Bottom Line of Pepsico
Pepsi –cola was started in the summer of 1898 in New Bern, North Carolina by Pharmacist Caleb Bradnham. PepsiCo Inc. started in 1965 with the merger of Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay. Since then, PepsiCo has continued to grow, adding new brands and product lines meeting the demands of the market. Throughout the years, they have strived and worked toward environmental sustainability. The ability to be financial stable gives PepsiCo the ability to give back and donate to those communities they are located in. PepsiCo’s mission to provide performance with purpose means delivering sustainable growth by investing in a healthier future for people and our planet. PepsiCo is continually increasing their triple bottom line.
Environmental. PepsiCo is committed to protecting the environment. They protect natural resources in two different ways; innovation and efficient use of land, energy, water and packaging. PepsiCo’s newest environmental innovation is a bottle made entirely of plant material, which will reduce PepsiCo’s potential carbon footprint. The bottle is made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other materials. Pepsi also plans to use leftover scraps from its food business. Water is treated as a limited valuable resource. By 2015, they aim to improve their water-use efficiency by 20 percent from what it is today. To minimize their impact on the land, PepsiCo continually strives to live by the five R’s; reduce, recycle, use renewable sources, remove environmentally sensitive materials, and reuse packaging. To increase the company’s energy conservation, PepsiCo uses renewable fuel, solar energy, and resource conservation system. Along with being increasing environmentally aware, they are also expanding their economic impact. Economic.     Pepsi-Cola began as a drink developed by a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham in his drugstore in 1893. The soft drink was made to be a tonic to aid in digestion and as a refreshing drink that gives an energy boost. This concoction made of pepsin and kola nuts was originally called “Brad’s Drink” named after its inventor, but was later changed to Pepsi-Cola to be more marketable. Originally, this beverage was sold in drug stores and at soda fountains, but was later sold in bottled form to facilitate mass distribution. The Great Depression was a major setback for many American companies and there was no exception for Pepsi. However, the company strived to remain strong and offered its product for five cents in the mid thirties while touting that their product offered twice as much for half the price of Coke’s product. During this time their ad campaigns and marketing tactics worked and their company continued to remain profitable despite a harsh economic climate. Pepsi marketed its products to virtually everyone, young and old, but they often utilized creative marketing tactics to entice new customers to try their products. In the mid 1940’s Pepsi began a marketing campaign to gain more popularity with African American customers whom the company decided where not getting adequate attention with regards to marketing and advertising. PepsiCo today now has interests in many different brands and product lines. Some of their most notable brands familiar to consumers today are Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lays, SoBe, Tostitos, Sabra, Near East, Pasta Roni, Sun Chips, Cheetos, Quaker, Doritos, Sierra Mist, and Dole to name a few.
