Threat of New Competition & Intensity of Competitive Rivalry

Domestic competitors: According to exhibit one in the case, firecrackers and fireworks total revenue in China increased 36.01 percent from 2007 to 2009. As the hometown of firecrackers and fireworks in China, Liuyang naturally had increased revenue in firecrackers and fireworks. The revenue went up 68.33 percent from 750,000,000 USD to 1,262,500,000 USD. Moreover, fireworks industry is a low- technology and traditional industry. The initial capital requirement for starting a fireworks- manufacturing facility was relatively low, less than 20,000 USD. Those reasons contribute that there are 2,702 fireworks manufacturers in the Liuyang District with an additional 2,144 in the surrounding areas. Fortunately, most factories were dominated by small family-owned –and –operated workshops and most of the employees in the factories were regular farmers who had learned how to make fireworks just by watching and following their elders. As a result, those factories only manufactured fireworks instead of designing fireworks.

Strategy: I believe there still have opportunities in this sunset industry only the company can focus on the product diverseness and SOP control to have more competitiveness to their rivals. First, I will concentrate on R&D to produce the fireworks that can shoot with long distance and with much safety no matter during the process of manufacturing or launching. R&D department also has to develop more environment-friendly fireworks by changing the materials making fireworks. Every new year eve, most of the big cities in the world including London, Sydney, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Las Vegas, Taipei, Paris, Hong Kong, Prague will schedule the large-scale fireworks display events. (1) Those displays all are high altitude fireworks. Second, traditionally, fireworks are used in specific occasions such as Chinese new years, or the religious events. People launch fireworks and firecrackers to expel

As you are aware you our company needs to be sure that our consumers are aware of two key things their own liability, and warnings. Our consumers need to be aware that when they use our products that they alone are responsible for any damage done by the firing of the firework is their responsibility and not ours. Insurance companies are saying “you can’t always control who is watching your fireworks display and never know who might file a lawsuit against you for any bodily harm caused by a roge firework. Despite how complicated fireworks liability may sound, making sure you’re covered in the event of injuries or property damage is as simple as finding the right custom fireworks insurance plan that can be designed exactly for your needs (Xinsurance, 2009).”…

    Gun Powder

Third great Chinese invention is gunpowder. Everything from Guy Fawke's night fireworks to modern artillery shells owes their origin to this. Ancient necromancers searching for the elixir of everlasting life on behalf of the Emperor discovered that mixtures of certain fuels and ores could, if mixed in the right proportions and heated, produce an explosion. This led in time to the discovery of gunpowder. In 1044 Zeng Gongliang wrote “The Collection of the Most Important Military Techniques”, and in this text he recorded three formulae for gunpowder. Each was based on saltpetre (potassium nitrate), sulphur and charcoal. Joseph Needham identified these as the earliest formulae for what we now know as gunpowder. The formula for gunpowder reached the Arab world in the 12th Century and Europe in the 14th century. Common folklore states that gunpowder was first used for entertainment only, with fireworks, but the military potential was soon exploited. Indeed the earliest known illustration of a cannon dating from around 1127 was found in China, the time of the changeover from the Northern Song Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty. This was 150 years earlier than the cannon were developed in the west. The Song people also used gunpowder to make fire lances, or flamethrowers, and anti-personnel mines (for which we might be less grateful!). By the end of the Song Dynasty the Chinese had invented multi-stage rockets. In a way this could be seen as the idea behind the rocket, which put a man on the moon. Joseph Needham also suggests that the idea of an explosion in a self-contained cylinder inspired in time the internal combustion engine.…

The history of fireworks goes back to China thousands of years before Christ. The first firecrackers were actually chunks of green bamboo. When there was no available wood, these chunks were used as fuel in a fire and would explode soon after heating up. These primitive explosives then became an important part of Chinese culture and were used in many different public displays. Although they were basically just ways of having fun, these explosives soon developed into more advanced weapons and explosives.…

The movie Mindwalk, talks about interconnections, relationships, life, ethics, values. The movie gives a message that we should change our perspective to look at things. We should completely change the way we see the world, that is we need to understand that all problems are simply fragments of one single crisis, the crisis of perception. We need to change our system. The system thinks about intervention and not about prevention. Our world lacks vision, perspective, interconnectedness and relationships. We need to improve our education system. We need to understand that we are the one’s responsible for our acts if no matter if we are involved directly or indirectly in the consequence of our actions.…
